arm slap
« on: January 29, 2011, 10:15:00 PM »
here recently my bow is hitting my arm, i have tried to open my stance, close my stance, changed my grip on the bow and it still happens. not on every shot but often enough that it bothers you. just was wondering any other ideas?

bend your elbow down the one holding the bow, do not stiff arm it.

Two things to look at.
1 - likely your draw length is slightly to long
2 - your bow shoulder (left if your right handed) is to high.

I have found that the more/longer i shoot each session, i get more relaxed on form, so i have to consistently remind my self to do the same thing EVERY time, as soon as something changes, your shot placement, bow torque, release, something else, changes (if that makes sense), i have also found that as i shoot longer my arms get tired and i am pushing harder on my bow arm, so then i at some point lock my elbow out, and have to tell myself to drop my shoulder, roll my elbow, make sure my grip is relaxed and hand is not wrapped around the bow, yada yada yada.

Like my dad and grandpa taught me, as long as it takes to draw, aim, hold, and fire, the shot is the fastest part that takes place, if you change anything during the actual firing it will change what the bow and arrow will do, have you noticed any difference in shot placement or grouping?

As well as stated before, is your draw length correct? or your strings could be stretching, in which case you would have to push farther to hit the wall, which could raise your shoulder or roll your elbow in, or both, remember push hard up front but relaxed at the same time.

This is what works for me, i am a perfectionist, especially with shooting, but by no means perfect, i am however constantly criticing (sp?) myself on how i can be better or do something better, and i have found these are the things i constantly have to remind myself, i am by no means a pro but this works for me. :twocents:

When I first started shooting, I used to hit the inside of my forearm and my chest.  I thought I needed an arm guard.  The guy teaching me checked out my draw length and once satisfied told me to take my shirt off and shoot without it until my problem was solved.   :o   Not saying I would suggest that technique, but it only took me a couple of shots before I figured it out, I was shooting more poundage than I was ready for so I was locking my elbow.
