Can't call worth crap
« on: February 04, 2011, 05:03:59 PM »
I've been out a total of 14 times this season. Just last week I shot my first two coyotes  :IBCOOL:. One was off hand call and one was off an electronic call. I used the electronic call first and brought the dog into about 100 yards before he met 175 grains of 7mm mag. The second one wouldn't come closer than 250 but I held one inch over on him and blew a 6 inch whole through his spine and the top of his back.    While this is all good and fun, what I'm really wanting to do is to learn how to use only hand calls to get them in close. SHooting coyotes is easy enough since I found a rancher who wants them dead and I've just been hunting a bait pile. I don't count those coyotes as kills. So what I'm getting at is...Is there anyone out there who'd be willing to take me out on a hunt or two to show me the ropes? I'm looking for a more traditional and rewarding way of hunting the doggies. I'd appreciate any tips or pointers as well or even land that's not too hunted over.

First, 2 coyotes in 14 stands is GOOD! 20 years from now you are going to beg for that average. You might want to reconsider the 7mm 175 grain bullets coyotes are very tough, you might want a bigger gun!! :chuckle: Where do you live and hunt?

Like Carl said your doing pretty good.  I personally think that calling sounds are a very small part of coyote hunting.  I use a lot of very strange sounds and have called in coyotes with the very cheapest E and hand calls to expensive custom hand calls and high end E-callers.  The hardest parts are stand location, understanding what coyotes are going to do and scent, sound and movement control. Even if someone shows you its still a learning curve on you own.  The more you get out and call, pay attention to things that go right and try to figure out why they did, and when things go WRONG(backdoored, spotted, short stopped) figure out how you could have made the stand and eliminated the problem.  Just because nothing showed up doent mean something went wrong.

Keep at it.

Words to live by;  Setup is everything.  "You can fool a coyotes eyes and ears, but you can't fool a coyotes nose, and they ALWAYS believe their nose!"

As far as your calling success goes, you defiately have room for improvement.  I've gone 23 sets without seeing a dog!  A personal best for me. :'(  When you top that, let me know. :(

I find that the best coyote call is dead elk guts, when that is not possible I use a cheap e-call. Like they said, make sure you are hidden, head to toe. The coyotes probably wouldn't come in close to you because they won't come anywhere near your smell. You have to be covered with scent, they are some of the trickiest dogs. I have seen one wrong whiff of human send them running.
I hunt small game, deer and yotes.

Hey CastleRocker you must be hunting the same spots I do. It's been tough around here. I have about 20 spots to set stands, but 10 I try more than the others. I think i have your 23 stands without a kill beat by a longshot.  :chuckle:. If it wasn't for the enjoyment of getting out and enjoying nature along the way I'd go nuts. If I could call dogs in as good as I call deer, crows, porkys I'd be happy. Just gets a little frustrating sometimes. :bash:

jgregg, I figured you had to be fairly young, nobody I know with much age under their belt would want to shoot a 7mm with 175gr. bullets more than once in a days time.   :chuckle:  My brother has one, and I'm getting to old for that kind of hammering.  You don't really know it yet, but I think you are getting very close to accomplishing your goal.  You already have the desire for the true hunt.  Besides, if it was easy everyone would kill 8 - 10 dogs each time out, and by March there wouldn't be any left.  Keep on Hunting.   ;)

DUDE - I hope you guys arent killing all my secret personal spots dry! :'(  (the spots you turned me on to!)  :chuckle:

Actually maybe I should say 'calling' the spots dry since it sounds like there hasnt been alot of success on the killing end! Keep at it, I think you will be dead'n alot more dogs as the pup season continues on.
I aint superstitious - cuz its bad luck!
