Restoration Questions
« on: February 07, 2011, 03:24:22 PM »
I just got my granfathers buck after years of neglect.  It was mounted in 1946-47.  Taxidermy has come a long way since then.  I am going to have antlers restored and then remounted.  Somewhere along the way tar got spilled on the antlers.   :bash: Any recommendations on a taxidermist?  I plan on doing this in a couple of stages, antler restoration/coloring and then a new shoulder mount.  Any info or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  Here are some pics. first one is my great granfather with the fresh mount in 1947 and the mount as is today.
I've hunted almost everyday of my life, the rest have been wasted.

is it just me or is that thing scarier then hell...in all seriousness though it's awesome that you are trying to preserve your grandpa's buck.

Wow!  Thats some real taxidermy work there.  Looks like they wrapped the full skull and lower jaw to build the form, and what about those earliners?  They look like they were formed from tin?  Taxidermists today dont have to have the skills or put in as much effort as they did then.

That is how it was done in the old days.  They have come a long way since back then.

dang that was old school there, thanks for posting the pictures really nice to see some of the early work. Not to often do we get to see how the pioneers of this industry did it.
