I had a good thing to say about the WMA's today, so I thought that I'd share it. I went turkey hunting in the Grouse Flats WMA in Asotin County today. As I stepped out of the truck I heard turkeys gobbling on both sides of the truck, and I was ecstatic about the prospects. As it turns out, my luck with the birds was nil; I couldn't get one within bow range for anything. But the highlight of the trip was while I was watching 5 birds in the binos and waiting for them to get out of the field to move in and try to call in the tom; I looked up from the glasses and saw an elk coming out from behind a rigde. I moved the glasses, and was delighted to see that it was a mature bull (and a good one at that). When all was said and done, I had 8 large, mature bulls within 500 yards for over 2 hours. I got several pictures and about 30 minutes of video of them playing and chasing each other. To say I had a good day would be an understatement. Who cares about turkeys when you can see big bulls for that long. I'd guess from 5:30 until noon I saw about 110 elk with about 30 bulls of varying size. Not all of them were on the WMA, but I'd guess that I saw 30 elk, 20 turkeys and 5 deer in that 500 acres today.
I say congrats to the state, and I'd love to see more of those properties springing up.
