Taked motherinto new camera thinkin abkout the fz18, but which is better for battery's AA's or the chargeable kind?  How long will the fz18 last on a charge?

long time.
a few hundred shots  at least depending on the quality setting it's at and how much you use the flash.
battery life has not been an issue for me yet.

Welcome to the FZ club. I have a feeling you will like it. As far as the battery, mine will last all weekend (200-300 shots) and that is using the screen.
