Have you bedded an action?

I am reading on it and know I can do it, but wanted to see if ya'll have had any experience with it.....

I saw on my Abolt, the factory bedded the recoil lug, but that is it.... I think I need to take it a step further....

I would argue that recoil lug areas are THE areas of contact between wood and metal. Given that barel is floated... I wouldn't bother with it, if you have some good accuracy at this point.

Just one.  Win M70 Fwt from the early 90's I did last winter.  Had a little spot of hot glue looking bedding from the factory and I always wanted to try it.  I got stockmakers screws, clay, and Acraglas from Brownells. Hogged out the stock, packed in the action voids with clay, went for it. I did the whole action, not just the lug.  Pretty easy, just have to be careful and thorough.  I used aluminum pillars and Acraglas gel for a stress free perfect fit in theory.  Turned out good, fit is perfect, and I've eliminated a variable in accuracy.

I was aprehensive at first but it's really easy to do. Don't forget the release agent!

I used a Devcon epoxy and white lithium grease as the release agent.

some people use Pam cooking spray as a realease agent also.

Did that model 70 have a Boss on it??

My Abolt "shoots good" but to be honest, I've never sat down on a bench with good bags and REALLY put it to the test. Will have to do that this spring and see what I come up with. If its not tight, I"ll go ahead and bed it some more, or possibly put a Bell and Carlson on it (and bed it)....

I've done 5 stocks with Devcon. It gets easier every time. There are a few good videos on YouTube that will walk you through it.

I've done quite a few over the years. Every big caliber rifle I own is done. So are many of my friends rifles. Done by me. They definitely shoot better and accuracy is repeatable when you take your gun apart and put it back together.
I like the Acraglas Gel. Yes, use the release agent. Twice. It comes right off in the shower after you've removed the barreled action from the bedding upon curing. Removal can be done the next day but it takes 7 days for total hardness. Nothing wrong with leaving it together till then either.
Plumbers Putty works great for filling voids like the magazine well and trigger well if removed.
A couple things I do to make a really solid job is to use a drill press and a cone shaped drill bit like a Uni-Bit or Step Drill. I drill out the width of the recoil lug area to make more room for bedding material and the screw holes that hold the barreled action in place get drilled out slightly also. Leave the wood on the bottom of the stock but drill out the inside. This creates cavities for the Gel get into. This ensures that the screw/bolt holes will be exact and super strong and also will not wear or enlarge over time.
Put release agent on the screws/bolts also. Place a (thickness ?)piece of paper, cardboard or plastic in front of the recoil lug under the barrel to ensure a good floating. Myself, I don't like the dollar bill thing. I want a good space so that barrel can move without interference exactly the same every shot. Cereal box cardboard is about the right thickness.
