I know lots of fishing guides that can make a living at it, but you can fish virtually year round. The hunting season is so short and with the quantity and quality of game in Washington I can't see a guide making a living at it. Unless your a "broker" type guide booking hunts all over like Bearpaw. Hey I'm not trying to break anybody's balls here. I just hate it when bad information is put out there is all. No offense to Norse at all, great guy.

What I am referring to on bad information is the guide license. You do need one if guiding fishing trips but not for guiding hunting trips. If you are charging a fee to guide hunting trips you will need a master business license, available on-line from the state department of licensing for a one time twenty dollar fee which sets up an account for your sales tax charges but is not necessary if doing the guiding for free. The forest service also has a permit which is annual if you are operating a business or event which collects a fee. It is five percent of adjusted gross receipts for one time events and 3 percent of adjusted gross receipts for multiple events under a single permit; or using the minimum fees for recreation events that have been established, but may vary, by National Forest. I am not sure of the exact minimum fee. But if no fee is charged this is also not necessary. A person could "guide" for no fee and need no permits or licenses and accept "tips" which need only be shown on that individuals tax return under wages, tips, and earnings. With goods (Bottle of Jim Beam) or services (paint your house)represented at an equal monetary value for the goods or services.  Now with that said, if you would love a guided hunt with quality guides and guaranteed opportunity, book with Rugged Class Outfitters.

Or hook up with rtspring and nail one. Just don't pay him for his services but tip him for his time if you wish. But remember rt you must report it on your tax return. I'd rather see a tag/license/permit buying hunter get a bull over some guys blasting them all down by the feeding stations in December like I have seen over too many years!

I would love that, but cannot afford it, I get a chance every year myself, for under $500 including fuel so.....
But I am curious about their "guarantee", what about old, fat, slow, lazy clients ?
Is it a "money back" or "next trip" guarantee ?

Is this thread going to die???

Just a little info on some things. There was nothing meant from this POST other than an offer to help and meet new people.
About 3 years ago in this same unit opening morning, I was driving down the road to a "SPOT" I know. Well out on the road comes this guy about 70 at about 0800 he says to me " I got one down" I parked my truck and helped this guy drag his elk out to the road, it was about a mile and half from the road. at about noon we were done getting this elk out. I really thought this guy may have a heart attack pulling this elk out. I'm 6 ' 4 about 240 and strong enough to hold my own....

Anyway I gave up opening morning of elk season to HELP some stranger out. Thats the type of guy I am......  And i wish there were more hunters out there willing to do the same.......its a brotherhood not a who can bash who operation.............

And that evening this guy shows up at my camp with a bottle of whiskey and said " thank you so much"

haven't spoken to him since............
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

rtspring just be careful about accepting tips, I think that was bad information. I have only been in business for 30+ years because I try to avoid breaking any laws and try to stay well versed in what's legal and what's not. In most states the determining factor for illegal guiding cases is if the person accepted compensation (of any type). Through the years I know of dozens of guys who have tried to skirt the issue and ended up losing.

I think the USFS will consider tips to be compensation for taking someone hunting and if a sting was put on you that you would end up in federal court for illegal guiding on US Government lands. If I were you, I would ask the forest in the area where you want to take someone hunting what they consider guiding and compensation, and if someone buys your gas or gives you a bottle of booze if that breaks any laws.  :twocents:

It's much better to be safe than sorry. :hello:

Wow so how about that Peaches Ridge tag?         Kinda funny with all the talk on hear about the unit.   I have been in the unit during the last 6 archery seasons (without a BB tag) and have not Hardly seen anyone there let alone tag holder.  plenty of bulls but a real lack of ppl willing to get far off the road or behind the gates.  Great news for those who do.   Guide or no guide it's a big area with lots of animals and just getting a tag is a score.  I know my fingers are crossed.  Can't wait  to hear who gets drawn.

Well, rt, if you happen to help me out I'll invite a friend over to my camp for a beer or two.  It's not a "gift" just a friend having a beer.  Or a drink.  Whatever.  I think that the spirit of what you were initially saying has totally been lost...that's too bad.  Good luck next hunting season.
