6.5x.284..whos got one?
« on: March 15, 2011, 03:25:56 PM »
So heres my question?I just picked up a Remington 700 chambered in 30-06 and is in great condition but I don't like an '06 so want to rechamber to 6.5x.284.Would like to here what any of you have to say about your's and what barrel your setup has.I am thinking about putting on a Lilja or Hart Medium heavy varmit at 28" with Nightforce 5.5-22X56 optics. Thanks

Rem 700 short action (so long bullets are a single shot)

Shelin Trigger & Barrel

HS Tactical stock.

Vortex 6.5x20

It is a good gun. I can get sub MOA at 300 & 500 yds but at 100 it is just under MOA They tighten up a little way out. I wanted it to double as a hunting rifle. I think that was my mistake. To do it again it would be a bench gun.  :twocents:

I have never hunted with it but plan to this year.

Scenar's, SMK 142 do well.

I have some SST's and some VLD's to try out. (Thinking hunting)

Thats why I wanted to use the '06,so I didnt have the OCL issue as well as having the bigger bolt face.I am gonna do my own thumbhole stock from a semi finished from american gunstocks.I am actually building this for my 16 year old son to use on antelope and open country mulies as we are moving back to Montana in a few weeks.I have a Vortex 6-20 on my 220 swift, great optics for the money.

Mine is not a x284 but is x06. It runs a wyatts box and also likes the 142's. I suggest a 8twist.

That would be a great set-up.  My buddy shoots one like that.   It wears a 26" 5.5 contour Hart.   I've got a 27" Hart "oversized-heavy" on my 300 WM and 5.5-22x50 NF.    My other buddy shoots a Cooper Phoenix in 6.5x284.   I took a decent buck at a little over 650 yards with it in Wyoming.

wenatchee, I have killed a few deer and elk with the 142 smk. do not expect the berger to what the smk will not, their performance on game is identical.

This shop builds mainly 6.5 x 284 chambered rifles. I've known JB for years and he's always trying to get me into one. Just not ready yet but you might wanna give em a holler.

For arguement sake, you might want to consider a factory rifle..

The new Savage 111 LRH is chambered in 6.5x284 norma and is a pretty awesome rifle.

Ya, I saw that Savage but it's still a factory rifle and not really wanting that stock.I already have that same style set-up on my Savage .204 Ruger.Plus, it's more fun to have a rifle set up exactlly the way that I want it!

Well, I will agree with you on the stock.. that is probably the ONLY thing I don't like about the LRH.. well.. to be specific I do not like the recoil pad set up.. feels loose and makes the rifle feel cheap. Other than that, I have it on my list to get.

Good luck on your search!

The rifle is cheap. To have a tack driver under 2g's is pretty awesome. It would be nice to have a better that shot like a custom.

That sounds like a NICE setup. How come the 28" barrel though? Only reason I ask, is that I have a Interarms Mark X chambered in 300 weatherby that came with a 28" shilen barrel and I thought that was super cool (little extra velocity!)... but it turned out a PAIN to carry around.. getting in and out of a rig or moving that thing thorugh anything but WIDE open country was just to damn long. Felt like I was carrying around a musket after a while. So I cut it 26" and I am much happier. Just my  :twocents:

Overall though I will say that sounds like the most bad ass 6.5x284 norma I have ever heard of.

That is a good point on barrel length but I thought of that before hand. This is actually gonna be a long range antelope and open country mule deer rifle that my sons will probably use more often than myself.I already have a similar set-up but chambered in .257 ReeBee but with a 27" Douglas #5.We are moving back home to Montana in a few weeks so both rifles should get put to good use.I am just trying to decide wether or not to have the rifleing cut with conventional 4 or go with the 5R.I The other thing I am trying to decide is if I should put on a Fox River muzzle brake or not.
