Grain size for a 38sp+P snub nose
« on: March 18, 2011, 09:12:18 PM »
Is a 158gr pill too big to push out of a snub nose at standard pressure?  I've got an LCR and a bunch of 158gr plated HP, and am wondering if I should take the time to work them up at standard pressures, or get something at a lower grain.  I could use them for .357 instead.

My J frame shoots 158gr the best I think, accurate and easier on the hand than some of the lighter loads, more of a push than a snap.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

Is that with a + load?

No,it was standard pressure, I want to try Buffalo Bore in 158gr now though. The snappiest stuff I have shot through that little pistol has been PMC fmj in (I think) 115gr, that stuff flat stings! I've shot a bunch of +p Hydra-shok and Gold dot ammo through it and both seem to bite less than that PMC.

You're getting that snap from the higher velocity from the lighter loads, and will get a different slam from the 158's. The FBI did a lot of testing of pills in 38cal from snubbies.  I think you'll find managability and better performance from 147gn HP's at near +P loads.

I like 125gr +p JHPs for mine - they are snappy for sure, but that factory grip is awesome for absorbing felt recoil.  Remington Golden Saber being the brand of choice.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

Golden Sabre's are what I have loaded in my wife's snubby.

I carry a 626 at work and shoot the Federal 158 gr +P. nyclad  and also Speer 135 gr GDHP. Both shoot accurately for me.

Most of my shooting is done under 15 yds.

After about 50 rounds hands gets a bit sore though.
