Long range .22lr, max effective range?
« on: April 05, 2011, 03:23:01 PM »
I just bought a little .22lr to add to my collection.  Its a H&R break action single shot.  Seems to be a tack driver using iron sights.  Since this one is single shot, I want to turn it into a long range gun.  What do you think is the farthest a .22 can go with out seriously loosing accuracy?  I would like to keep groups no more than 3-4 inches if possible.  Ill have a descent scope that I know can get the job done.

I was thinking no more than 200 yards? due to the bullet having to go from sonic to sub sonic?

What are your thoughts? opinions.

Ammo I will use will likely be remington bulk hollowpoints.

I have never heard of anybody ever mentioning anything like this with a gun of this caliber.  You might want to settle on 50 yds, as I'm guessing you won't be able to group them consistant at 3" at 100.  I may be wrong................

I'd say you'l probably start noticing a difference past 100yrds. Past 300, I wouldnt expect to hit the target  :chuckle:

I think looking for a 3-4" 200 yard group with the rifle that you're shooting with the ammo that you want to shoot is unattainable.
3-4" at 100 maybe on a dead calm day from the bench, my 10/22 will do that...but ain't happening at 200.

Does your 10/22 have iron sights like his?

I try not to shoot my scoped 22 at much under 100 yards, the hold-over at 150 is quite a bit but still seems quite accurate, this particular gun will group under an inch at that 100 yards :twocents: I have no idea how well the OP's rifle shoots.

FWIW, some experimentation will be necessary to find the ammunition your rifle likes best, sub-sonics won't be an option at much over 50 yards. I would say you can probably get better results at 300 yards than you might think but you will need a pretty tall front mount for that scope  :chuckle:
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

No...I was assuming that he's not planning on shooting like he wants to with iron sights. If he is, then I think this thread is a joke.

Sure Ill do a report, sounds like a good idea, ill try to include a video.

This is all just for fun, no hunting, just plinking so I am not really worried about energy.

I guess Ill just give it a go at 150 to see what I can do, will hold out for a nice calm day.  3-4 inch groups may be pushing it  :chuckle: But hey ill try my best.
Ive got a nice bi pod installed on the gun, and am waiting for my scope rail to mount up my scope.

I guess we should talk about ammo.  What do you think would be a good accurate round?  I mentioned the remington bulk stuff because i already have around 1500 rounds of it for my ruger mark III, but I guess I wouldn't be apposed to buying some stuff specifically for this gun, as .22 is cheap anyways.

Special T - Nice man!  Sounds like 150 yards is doable then!
MtnMuley - I am using a scope, read the rest of the post.

Here is some videos of guys shooting long range with their .22lr!

I have an old Remington 552 Speedmaster that is a tack driver. I have a 3-9 scope with adjustable turrets on it. It will shoot sub MOA groups at 100yds. Have not tried anything over 100 with it yet.

Are you talking measured groups on a paper target or "beer can groups"? I used to shoot precision match 50 meter with a 22 rifle, a Remington had about 1200 into it the guys who were "good" had 2500 - 4000 in the guns, most had 2 or 3. These guns will not even chamber non match ammo or about 10.00 thru 20.00 per box. Mine could and did shoot .25 group regularly at 50 meters, some guys much better. the 10 ring bull was .25 inch and the X was .125, there are 25 targets one shot at each, some guys who won consistently shot 245-248 with 5 thru 18 X's.
At 50 I saw bullets move an inch in a light wind gust. I think if you guys shoot a few hundred rounds thru paper targets at those ranges with those guns you are in for a real eye opener. My 2. :hello:
