New Appreciation
« on: April 17, 2011, 09:01:49 PM »
Had a buddy in Elk call me on Friday. He was having some friends come up to hunt birds. He didn't have time to make a scouting run so asked if I would.
Went out Friday and made a loop of his place to see where the birds had been strutin. When I cut across on pasture it had the normal batch of Jake's cruising.
So then did the fence line run also checking. No evidence of and strutting yet.
Even though he has a fair amount of birds. Started back towards the house came into the same pasture about 40 minutes before dark and there was close to 100 birds wandering around.I even saw a few monster's.

Met him and told him what I had seen so I found out the youngman who was coming was in a wheel chair. Buddy had some commitments in the morning so I said I'll be back to help.

Got back out in the morning at a little after 5a.m. and met the young man. Great attitude to what we are going to do. So lets go put one on the lawn!!!
The amount of logistics to get this set up was a bit over whelming, Flat ground that is nothing to us is a chore to get across. Along with the amount of equipment that is required. So 3 of us got him set up in his blind and then we set decoy's and wished him and his Dad luck.

I set up aways off and had a batch of 4 Jake's walk past me close enough I could have petted the closest bird. Watched them crest the hill and get in the pasture, So now I am listening for the shot!!!  :IBCOOL:

After an hour and a half I made a big circle to see what I missed. Never saw the birds.
Buddies wife told him that there would be B's & G's around 11 am. So when it got close he was ready to go have some. We went and got the rig to get him loaded back into so we could take him out along with all the gear so as we are gathering up the stuff across the field comes the parade of birds. quick everyone under the tent. Birds came across the field and where hung up about 125 yards away from the dec's and just couldn't close the deal with the rig sitting 30 yards behind us.

If he does get to come back I will do my best to get him lined up on a bird. But as most can say the weather was not the best they talked in the trees and when they hit the lawn they shut up!
