Rechargeable NiMH Batteries in Trailcams
« on: March 12, 2011, 06:23:07 PM »
How many of you use rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride batteries in your trail cams? I just ordered a set of (12) along with a charger from Amazon. I know they last much longer than alkaline but I was curious if anyone had some real data from using them in trail cams. Along with eliminating problems with finding dead batteries after a 2 hour hike to the camera, I hope to save some $$$ in the long run. The rechargeables aren't cheap at $45 for set of (12) but I think they will pay for themselves fairly quickly.

Haven't used them myself, though I'm sure you won't be disappointed in the long run like you say.  I've been getting by with 8x lithiums in my Bushnell, about $15 per camera per year in batteries.

I have thought about putting recharables in and mounting a solar charger to keep them maintained. Then just have to swap cards. Any one try that?

I have the " Green  "D" Rechargeable " batteries from Radio Shack. I charge them up in my charger and they last a long time with my solar panel. They will need to be recharged on your home charger from time to time. You might get a couple weeks out of them if you have good solar exposure. I'm happy.

I got the rechargeable NIMH batteries by TENERGY off the net and they are working great.  Went 6 months in my Bushnell cam, which takes AA batteries and was still going strong, but my Cuddeback which uses D batteries was dead at about 2 months.  Even regular batteries go dead pretty quickly in my Cuddeback though.  I figure if the chargeables last 4 soaks, they will have paid for themselves.  They are sure working good in my Bushnell cam right now....I tell you what.  Good luck
