« on: May 15, 2011, 11:04:29 PM »
just wondering the quality of bucks in there, i know one person that drew about 6 years ago shot a 160 buck he said he chased two other deer that were alot bigger and could never get a decent shot at them.

I haven't, but I do know it used to be a good hunt, but maybe not so much anymore. It used to also be a relatively easy draw, because they issued a lot of permits, and I think that could be one of the problems. The other issue is unlimited hunting pressure by the Yakama tribe. One year I think the Alkali hunts were completely canceled because of military training in there, yet the indians were still allowed to go in there and hunt. The other issue that I believe I heard has had an affect on deer in that area is hair loss.

That's about all I know. It certainly wouldn't be a bad choice but I think there may be better options, especially since we now only have two choices.

They both look to be a very tough hunt to draw. Alkali, with only 5 permits, is a more difficult draw than Entiat, with 25 permits. So, if those are your two choices, it actually makes sense to have Alkali as your number one choice.

I remember a few years ago, when the Alkali had 74 permits (I believe) and I put it down as a 4th choice, since it was a fairly easy hunt to draw, because of the high number of permits. But, still didn't draw. Now with only 5 permits I wouldn't even bother. Odds are just too low unless you have a zillion points.

Myself and 3 other friends drew the tag back in 04 and 06.  Back then it was a great hunt, we saw deer all over the place.  The biggest deer out of those two years for us was a 180''.   We said to our selves back then that once the tribes figure out how many deer were in there and how easy of a hunt it can be that this hunt wasn't gonna be good too much longer.  And that's exactly what has happend.  I don't believe the hair loss factor that the wdfw told me, I just believe they don't want to point the finger at the tribe.  I have good friends that bird hunted in there this year and the access control guards said that the indians can hunt what ever they want in the training center and that they didn't even have to wear hunter orange.  I still put in because I think you can find a huge buck in there, but you'll have to work a lot harder for it.  It's too bad they ruined one of the best tags we had.

Dandy buck, time2hunt.  It's too bad that unit is nosediving.  I've seen a couple bruisers there several years ago.  Not enough places to hide and too many permits targeting big bucks finally took its toll. :twocents:
