Coyote Wins a Free Scholarship!
« on: May 09, 2011, 10:27:47 AM »
Dang lucky ki-oat! But I think I learned a couple things too... (here's another long story from tripple...)  :chuckle:

So Saturday I took CoyoteCowboy out to my private hole but all we did was 'educate' a darn dog... :bash:

We got setup about 0630 and 5 minutes after sitting down - about 20yds apart - the rain started POURING down on us! But it stopped about 1/2hr into the stand. So I start out with my customary couple of barks & howls then bust into some pup distress on the FoxPro (I had headache and it was too early for mouth calls!)  :chuckle: 15-20min go by and no dice. So I start with the rabbit distress on my Lil Dog for another 15min - nuh-ting mang. A few minutes more of some ki-yi & pup distress on the lil dog....zippo....  now what?  :dunno: So I hit the cottontail distress on the FireStorm, try that for 10mins or so. Still all alone. (I should know better to be more patient since I've called them in after 45min out here before...)  :bash:

According to my FireStorm remote about 50min has gone by and I'm ready to give up. So I get up and look at CC with the  :dunno: arms and walk over to him. As we are standing there talking I see movement off my right shoulder, I look over and say 'KI-OAT KI-OAT - THERE'S DANG KI-OAT RIGHT THERE!!' He was about 60-70yds out in the brush (right out in front of CoyoteCowboy I might add.... :chuckle:) and turned away when he saw me walk over. He must have been sneaking in on Thumper,  my trusty lil rabbit decoy and CC didnt see him. It is pretty thick in some areas where we were at. But the coyote snakes off thru the brush and stops in a clearing about 125yds out behind the trees.  I could see him standing broadside perfect and I'm saying SHOOT HIM SHOOT HIM to CC, who has my AR. (I'm standing there holding my shotgun, which at 125yds may as well be my....well, nevermind) But CC cant see him behind the trees and it's blending in. So I tell him shift to the right slowly while 'splain'in where to look. I am waiting for him to dash off into the woods at any minute. (the ki-oat) So about this time I start the FoxPro again and after a minute the coyote turns and faces back towards us and almost like he's gonna come back in!  :yike: But soon after BOOM - CC takes a shot, ki-oat jumps out his shorts and exits stage left in real hurry....  :ACRY: We sit back down and try calling for another 5min to no avail so we go see if we can find some blood or something - nuh-ting. So, long story longer we just educated him and I doubt he will come to calls ever again

But I learned at least 2 things: #1 Even when I'm giving up and ready to quit - look around and be ready to shoot! And B - if it looks like he might come back in - WAIT - and see if it does, if not and it runs off, oh well, no harm no foul and he may come back again someday soon instead of being scared off by a missed shot. ....Although, seeings how I had a perfect view of him, and I know my gun very well, (and I'm 230yd harbinger of coyote death!)  :chuckle: I think I would have deaded that SOB where he stood!  :chuckle: Sorry CC, you know I was thinking it!  :chuckle: We never even totatlly confirmed you saw what you were shootin at!  :chuckle:

big thanks to tripledigitss for taking me out on my first official ki-oat hunt. seen 'em before deer hunting, hiking, camping and such. but sitting down with an avid (and talented) predator hunter and actually calling one in was a blast. can't wait to get back out there if he lets me hang with him again.  ;)

i learned a few valuable lessons too:
1) WAIT. i keep kicking myself for not waiting another 30 seconds to see what that darn 'yote would have done.
2) don't EVER let Tripledigitss sight in your rifle...  ;) haha! only kidding. def an operator error.

but i gotta disagree with tripledigitss about one thing... i don't think we educated it. that darn 'yote hardly saw us when it spooked and wasn't too concerned with us after he saw us. he wanted that rabbit. i took the 125 yd poke and he darted off into the brush. at that distance i don't think he made the connection between us, the decoy, the calls and my ill-placed shot. but that is my opinion...

Well I hope you are right CC - I dont know if they are as smart as I give them credit for! Either way I'm pretty sure we'll get another one to come in out there next time, if not more.

And thanks for the kind words, seems I got you fooled pretty good!  :chuckle:

And thank you too Dog Killa for the high marks as well!
