calling in toms
« on: May 14, 2011, 01:38:24 PM »
This is my first year turkey hunting and I have some questions about calling.  First, what are the needed calls?  I have a reed and a crow call.  Do I need a box?  Second, how often do you call and what noises do you make?  I have listened to a Primos cd and learned the cluck, whine, purr ect.

Thanks

The two calls I ALWAYS have with me are................
• Hunter Specialties® "Ring Zone™" slate pot call
• Lynch® "World Champion™" box call

It is more about your confidence in and ability than the particular caller you use or the call you make. Remember that turkeys have different voices just like we do ... its more about finding the proper turkey "rythmn" in your calling than the caller you use.  I think I use every call made excpt the squealing hen (and I may have to buy one some year) - diaphragms, boxes, pots, wingbones, tubes or snuffs, scratch calls, push pulls, etc. as well as numerous locators such as crow, owl, peacock, coyote, woodpecker, hawk, goose, etc.  I also yelp, cut, cluck, purr, cackle, whine, fly down, fighting purrs, etc. as it fits the occasion. Sometimes any call will work, and other times none will work.   There are also times the best call is not to call ... experience will teach you when to and when not to ... as well as what call to make and what call not to.  If it ain't working, try a different caller and call.  The best caller and call is the one that gets him in range for a safe and ethical shot.  Best advice --- practice, practice, practice.  :twocents:
