I can't help but notice while out on the lakes all the people that register their dinghys! Do people not know that if its under 16 feet and under 10hp they don't have to register it? Unless your going in federal waters its not required and I'm assuming these little boats aren't going in federal waters!

Probably because there are some lakes the are classified as "Navigational Waters" thats why..

Yea maybe but I'm bettin the majority of these boats are only fishing the small little lakes close to home and people are registering them just because they don't know.

Yeah, I looked into to when I had a small 10 footer with a 55lb thrust electric. I looked at the laws and saw that I was good. Not to many probably look at the regs and what necessitates registration. Thus why they register.

All you need to do is go to the Dept. of Licensing and it states it pretty clearly.

Why pay for it if you don't have to? That would be like registering your bicycle as if it was a motorcycle.

I'm actually surprised that they even allow people to register a vehicle that isn't one that needs to be registered.

I licence mine because technically, a dinghy or tender if used in conjunction with a larger boat is to be used to go to and from shore only. If you want to take it out for a ride, kids want to play around in it or go fishing, it needs to be registered. I have a 9 foot inflatable with a 8 hp on my 34' Tollycraft and was told by a WDFW officer that it needed to be registered if used for anything other than ship to shore, so I looked it up for myself and did just that. Better safe than sorry.

Yep,the list of navigable waters is pretty long.

There are a lot of guys that crab in the sound with their "dingys" and they're required to be registered.

I have my 14' Lund registered because its only about $20. The places that I fish that require it to be registered are...

Lake Washington
Lake Sammamish
Snohomish River
Columbia River (Rufus Woods or Drano Lake)
Puget Sound

I once had a 15hp outboard that I put a 9hp sticker on just for that reason. I was in college / broke and would not do that today as I would pay my share.

i've always wondered that too, you see them all over the thurston county lakes, little 8-10 footers that have probably never left the lake or seen a motor.

Sneaky, I heard it directly from the mouth of one of our marine patrol units. I know this doesn't give you a whole lot of peace of mind so I will attempt to find out where exactly it is where you can find it.

To navigate, operate, employ, or moor your vessel in Washington, you must have a Washington title, registration card, and registration decals, except:

If your vessel is a canoe, kayak, or a vessel not propelled by a motor or sail.
If your vessel is less than 16 feet in length and has a motor of 10 horsepower or less and is used on non-federal waters only.
If your vessel is properly registered by a resident of another state or country who uses Washington waters for 60 days or fewer.
The registration card must be onboard whenever you use your vessel.

Ok... so I have a little 10ft. No motor yet, and I wouldn't go above 10hp. But it was bought and registered in MT.

Do I have to register it in WA since it was bought out of state (no sales tax)?

Interested b/c I have heard several different versions. I've got the title on it, all I need to do is declare value. Having the same issue with the trailer. It wasn't manufactured, classified as homemade. How would you declare a value?

I've been told my dinghy should be registered as a deadly weapon, as it's torn up a few ports of call, but that's another matter!

Just don't overlook the federal waters issue. People forget about registrations and flares for small craft.

i have wondered the same.... i always thought maybe they had a big boat and used thier dinghy as a tender.... also, its easier to track a stolen boat if its registered....

just my personal thought however, it may be alot easier to transport a registered boat on a registered trailer vs just having tabs on the trailer?

i used to have a 14.5 runabout that i had a 15hp on, but got the stickers for a 9.9hp engine and re-badged it.... fished it for years with no problems from the man.

Yep, bought a drift boat brand new from a company in Oregon. Never had to do anything with the boat, just the trailer.

I just spent the day researching this subject. The list of navigable (federally controlled) waters is availible fron the Coast Guard. I picked up a Marsh rat and have an electic motor on it.
