I thought you had to register your wives and such to use them as boats?   

only if they float and carry a certain tonnage

Sneaky, I heard it directly from the mouth of one of our marine patrol units.  I know this doesn't give you a whole lot of peace of mind so I will attempt to find out where exactly it is where you can find it.

Boat Title, Registration, and Renewal

To navigate, operate, employ, or moor your vessel in Washington, you must have a Washington title, registration card, and registration decals, except:

If your vessel is a canoe, kayak, or a vessel not propelled by a motor or sail.
If your vessel is less than 16 feet in length and has a motor of 10 horsepower or less and is used on non-federal waters only.
If your vessel is properly registered by a resident of another state or country who uses Washington waters for 60 days or fewer.
The registration card must be onboard whenever you use your vessel.

Ok... so I have a little 10ft. No motor yet, and I wouldn't go above 10hp. But it was bought and registered in MT.

Do I have to register it in WA since it was bought out of state (no sales tax)?

Interested b/c I have heard several different versions. I've got the title on it, all I need to do is declare value. Having the same issue with the trailer. It wasn't manufactured, classified as homemade. How would you declare a value?

I've been told my dinghy should be registered as a deadly weapon, as it's torn up a few ports of call, but that's another matter!

Just don't overlook the federal waters issue.  People forget about registrations and flares for small craft.

i have wondered the same.... i always thought maybe they had a big boat and used thier dinghy as a tender.... also, its easier to track a stolen boat if its registered....

 just my personal thought however, it may be alot easier to transport a registered boat on a registered trailer vs just having tabs on the trailer?

i used to have a 14.5 runabout that i had a 15hp on, but got the stickers for a 9.9hp engine and re-badged it.... fished it for years with no problems from the man.

Yep, bought a drift boat brand new from a company in Oregon.  Never had to do anything with the boat, just the trailer.

I just spent the day researching this subject.  The list of navigable (federally controlled) waters is availible fron the Coast Guard.  I picked up a Marsh rat and have an electic motor on it.
