elk movement question
« on: May 19, 2011, 06:46:32 PM »
so i found a herd of elk in an area i thought looked really elky, kinda surprised me i was right for once.

now the  next question how far does everyone think elk may have moved off of their winter range, if they have. this herd is moderately high in the cascades. snow in the area is gone some snow up higher and in shadey areas but everything is green and growing

im asking because id like to find some elk sheds but ive only been back in washington for a week so i have no idea what the weather has been like or the animal movement in the last few weeks

I would look at it from a large scale.  Where are they at on the slope and how far up the canyon are they?  I usually anticipate the elk continuing to move to the upper end of a drainage or torwards the top of the slope.

When the temps heat up they will need water, feed, and cover.  Look for areas that can provide all three of these things.
