bowhunting yotes
« on: May 19, 2011, 09:38:59 PM »
So I went out tonight and it was a lil windy do I was faceing down wind(washed up n clotches was was n scent killer) managed to call in a dog at 30yrds but was behind some sage hoppin/trotting. I didn't know it was there till I was turning my head slowly then it took off. I was in front of a patch of sage and was useing a mouth call. Is there any tips I can get from ya guys to seal the deal? I don't have any rabbit decoys but I got a couple turkey, do u think that would work?

A turkey decoy will work in the right area. I'v been calling turkeys and had them come in looking for a turkey sandwich.

Would u just keep on using a rabbit in distress even wth the turkey decoy? Or just strictly a turkey call wth the decoy?

I would think you'd be OK with that. I've used a rabbit decoy and called them in with pup distress and once they see the rabbit they are focused on it. You could also use like a feather on a stick or tied to a bush branch. I also have a fox tail that is tied to a stake and it will move a around in the breeze or some guys tie fishing line to that kind of stuff. I am 100% totally sold on my Quiver Critter rabbit decoy - they are so focused on it they dont care/notice me!

As far as the scent block stuff - I dont think any of it works worth a darn. I think if they get a whiff of you or that stuff they know something is not normal. But of course I dont use Bounce sheets or scented soap or whatever on hunting gear. I think urine and animal type cover scents are a bit more effective than like earth cover or something. I put rabbit urine all over my decoy stuff. But I've had a ki-oat get all the way to the decoy and sniff it then spook. Just not real sold on any of that stuff.
I aint superstitious - cuz its bad luck!

You might try a little mouse squeeker to complete his arrival.   :twocents:

not sure if it would work but a pop up blind sounds like a decent idea, so that you could draw back undetected. i almost got a shot numerous times last year from my deer stand, but the little booger saw me try and draw. even when he was walkin directly away. :bash:
