Can a hunting dog aslo be a family dog?
« on: May 28, 2011, 09:58:06 AM »
big question, can a scent tracking hound be able to hunt in the field and what not be able to be at home and in town and be a good family dog and be able to handle herself and her "nose". I would like a dog I could hunt and track down varmint but still take over to my moms house and play with the kids and frisbee?
im just a country boy..hunting with hounds and training horses.

My two beagles are in the house all the time and they hunt just fine. they are no different than any other dog just train them and you should have no problem

My black lab is a great family dog around the house. That is until she sees the shotgun pulled out of the gun case, then it is all business from there. She absolutely knows from that point on that things are about to get serious...
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...

I think you'll find that once you get her hunting hard, really runnin her, then you'll have less issues at home.  Your dog will figure out the difference if you work her hard enough.  If not, then she'll be bored and you'll have issues again.

My labs are house dogs. They have beds in the living room and bedroom. They are spoiled rotten! when it comes time for hunting season they go nuts! If your dog works for you and loves you unconditionaly then your dog deserves to be spoiled. They are family members. If your dog is chained to a dog house then you probably shouldnt have a dog to begin with. Just my opinion. :twocents:

my vizsla is the perfect house dog. when he is in the house, he walks, he doesnt run, he is quiet and calm, only barks when there is somebody at the door, and even gets along with the cats. sometimes, i dont even know he is in the same room as i am, and he is only a year and a half old. sleeps on the bed too.

open the gun cabinet and touch the shotgun.... game over- all reason goes out the door. he has his game face on the moment you look at the 12....

of course no two dogs are the same...
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.
Forget the bear spray, use wasp killer. Concentrated delivery stream, 10X the product, and only $3.00 on sale.

I smoke two fish in the morning, I smoke two fish at night, I smoke two fish in de afternoon makes me feel alright

Yep. Hunting dogs need regular exercise and training and if  do this they are fine in the house.

I see so many people purchase hunting dogs and try and keep them as house dogs with no training and exercise. They end up in the pound
