Trail cam advice
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:18:34 PM »
I have a trail cam with pictures as well as video options i will be setting up this weekend.  This has a 2gig memory card.  I have never set one up and i am looking to give it a shot here close in the White river unit as practice.  It will then move to my elk unit which is about 2 hours away.  I will take any advice you guys can give me to hopefully get a successful bunch of pics.  THanks

1. If setting the camera up on a trail ensure the camera is pointing down the trail rather than having animals cross directly in front of it. This will allow the camera time to trigger. If you have one with faster trigger speeds it won't be as important.

2. Another option is setting it up over a watering hole or bait sight.

3. Most cameras seem to get the best photos if the animal is 10-15 feet away.

4. Place the camera on a tree that will not be easily swayed by the wind (many cameras will give you false triggers)

5. Sometimes you will get false photos if there is a lot of brush directly in front of it but usually not as bad as if you place the camera on thinner trees.

Make sure it is not facing directly towards the sunrise or sunset.

Mount it about three or four feet or so from the ground, depending on how the landscape lays.  Don't want it too high and critters walk under it or too low and just get leg shots.

If you put any type of bait or attractant out, make sure that you don't get any on the camera when you hang it...bears like their cameras flavored!

If you don't already have one, get or make some type of locking box/cable to protect your camera.

Make sure the batteries are good and you turn it on before you leave the area.
