Umtaneum Cow Elk tag
« on: June 18, 2011, 06:24:50 PM »
Hey Guys,

I finally got lucky and drew a muzzy cow tag for 342. It couldn't have come a better time as I'm going through a bad divorce. Anyhow, I've only been there in the modern when it was a zoo and that was later in the year.  Can anyone point me to some canyons or draws where I should start scouting or thoughts where they might be the 1st week in October?  Thanks so much!!

I also drew a cow tag there. Sounds like they will be in small pockets, but who knows where. Hopin to do some scouting maybe in august.  The roads are pretty rough I hear!

Lots of road hunters in there.  Drew that tag in 09 and the roads were like freeways at times (speeds included).  I went into it blind and managed to find some elk, just couldn't close the distance.  I saw the most fresh sign the further west I went, higher in elevation, but always seemed like I had just missed them.  Good luck to you, was one of my most fun hunts to date!

I drew the same tag and am new to the unit as well.  Will be scouting when possible from now till the opener and will be happy to compare notes with anyone else out scouting the area

Grew up in that unit! Should be an easy cow. heres my  :twocents: take it or leave it, some won't agree with me but from what I have found during early season, stay in the lower parts of the unit. The areas around clemans that are mixed sage brush with wooded canyons(hardy canyon). There is a good number of local elk and a lot less hunting pressure! Any questions feel free to ask.

Sweet draw.  I have drawn it for modern a few times and have always filled the tag.  I see hundreds of cow when there, just never see many bulls.  Beware of green dot road enforcement in the area. If you shoot me a pm I can point you in a few hot spots.

Not a super easy tag but can be doable with some scouting. I drew ml cow tags and filled both times on the first day. But I scouted a lot. Not as many animals are pushed around the unit like during modern firearms.

Get out and scout. Look for the deep canyons, dark stuff. Find a spot and wait.

You guys can find elk where you won't even think to look.
I have lived in the area for 70 years. And killed my share in 342. Modern and Muzzle loader.
