pickled perch?
« on: June 20, 2011, 12:52:15 AM »
the lake up above my house is just loaded with panfish and i saw a recipe in field and stream for picked pike that looks really good and i figured it would give me something to do for a few hours...

has anybody picked perch? i dont remember the last time i ate fish out of a lake, but i am a sucker for pickled fish...
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.

i did some research and evidently pickled perch, bluegill, crappie and even sucker are a delicasy in the great lakes area (go figure right?) and the north east.

http://www.backwoodshome.com/articles2/gabris91.html here is some more information on rollmops, and pickled fish.

http://www.owsd.org/Sharing_recipes.html there are 2 more recipes, along with a ton of game recipes.

just waiting for my buddy to get here and off to the lake.
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.

I saw that recipe too and once I move the boat south and start fishing the Snake more I'm going to try this on some smallies. Looked awesome.

Also saw a review where they used trout in the recipe and supposedly the individual said it turned out great.

Grew up in WI and Mom pickled many pike and suckers. Mom canned suckers and tasted really good.
Let me know if you need a recipe

Some friends and I went ice fishing years ago, and we caught a  :crap:-load of 8 to 10 inch perch.  I was low man on the pole with 185 perch.  I was up well after 3 AM filleting those things.  We all agreed that we'd NEVER do that again!   :bdid:
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

LMFAO, since I grew up in Northern New York and tried this with many different recipes and ways I could have told you so, but then someone else would have come on here and said no try it this way. So at least you got first hand expereince that it sucks to scale them, it sucks to fillet them and it sucks to pickle them. Have a great day you just made up your mind you will never have to do that again.
