Alkali / YTC elk... any advise???
« on: June 24, 2011, 12:05:31 PM »
Alright, I don't ask for a whole lot of advise but I figure what the heck, finally got some sort of bull tag so I better get with it.

I drew one of the unit 371 muzzy bull permits.

I know quite a few people on here have hunted out there a bit. I'm just curious as to numbers of elk seen or not seen and number and quality of bulls.

From what I know, it depends on the day. I'll have at least 11 days to hunt and I'll be hard at it.

Also, can anyone send me in the right direction of the harvest stats that they keep out there?

Any help is appreciated and would be repaid if you ever draw a tag in one of the units that I'm a little more familiar with.

Call out there and talk to Brian Knapp. He's the main biologist. He can give you all the stats. Go get your registration card and watch the video and scout a bunch of different units. REMEMBER that they can close any unit at any time so don't consentrate on just one area. Good luck and keep us posted.

J-Money, I have the utmost confidence that you will do what needs to be done to take a monster. My special lady friend will give you advice and instruction on shooting a muzzleloader if you would like it. As for me... I have my own giant elk scouting issues to deal with!!

Go there soon and get your recreation card and guns registered.  Dont bring the guns with you though but do bring this info:  make/model of all guns you wish to use out there, serial numbers, barrel length, and the finish of the gun (synthetic, glossy etc...) and color.  You will be directed to go to the police station to fill this info out.  When you do hunt make sure all your guns are in a case and in the back seat of your vehicle while driving.

Become familiar with the area, use a GPS unit out there it will help out a lot.  The maps they provide are in UTM grids so be able to use your GPS location and locate where you are on the map. There aren't many road signs out there and its easy to get turned around because there aren't many landmarks to key in on.  Bring 1-2 spare tires...the roads aren't that great and can do a number on your tires.
