Stolen Quad ???
« on: June 24, 2011, 12:19:18 PM »
I was looking for a new quad on craigslist yesterday and saw what I thought was a really screamin' deal on a 2010 Polaris Sportsman 850 EPS, with trailer for $2940...  http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/mcy/2448776937.html
Let listing sez its in Rochester, so I email the guy (no phone number to contact), and tell him I'd like to come and look at it and get it. He emails me back..Sorry, but it is in Rochester, Minnesota, and the price DOES include shipping and insurance to your location.  No phone, cuz he can't talk right now; has a throat infection.
It all seemed a little fishy to me.  I looked on craigslist for rochester, minnesota, and the quad isn't listed there.
1-2010 Polaris 850 Sportsman, with trailer for $2940.  Suspicious
2-Rochester Minnesota, not Washington...suspicious
3-No listing in Rochester, Minnesota craigslist....suspicious
4-No phone number to contact/can't talk cuz of throat infection....suspicious
5-Price includes shipping and insurance....suspicious

So, I did two things....first, I emailed him back and told him I wasn't comfortable with the arrangement, and was no longer interested in it; then I called the Rochester, Minnesota Police Department to tell them of my suspicions that the quad was stolen.  the officer wasn't interested at first, because I didn't know what the VIN was.  But I guess while we were talking he was going through his list of stolen property, and then sez to me, without the VIN I can't really do anything...oh, I only show one quad listed and it is a 2010 Polaris Sprotsmen 850......I told him that's exactly what this one is....so then he wanted the listing number, and when I told him it wasn't listed in the Rochester, Minnesota craigslist, but the Seattle craigslist, then he got even more interested.  I mean I told him at the very start I was calling from Seattle, but I guess he wasn't paying attention.
So, I doubt I'll ever here from the police, or know if it was a stolen quad, but my money is on that it is stolen.

I responded to one of those screaming deals some years back.  All it was was a way to get my return email address.  Got bombed with spam and porn for a year 'til I changed my email address.  I always flag the screaming deals as spam now and they go away.

You should have told him you were driving out there to have him sign off on the title.  Wonder what his reaction would have been?

It's a scam, there is a good chance the guy is in Eastern Europe.  Anytime you see something like a horse trailer, a boat, a car or something like this and it's fairly new and has a super low price, 99 times out of 100 it's a complete scam.  They will give a stateside location but most of the time the e-mails go back to someplace in Africa or Eastern Europe.
