williams creek unit
« on: June 25, 2011, 08:47:49 PM »
i know this is a touchy subject, but i am looking for anyone who knows williams creek unit.  been scouting there and can't seem to find very many gates.  is it open access at all times or what??  if its difficult to access, then thats where i want to hunt, if you know what i mean.   i am really wanting a coastal elk, and don't want to drive to clearwater to hunt.  which is where i used to hunt back in the day.  thank you and any advise is appreciated.

Theres gated roads in there. I accessed it right outside Pe Ell and most of the roads that I saw were all open, in fact I remember thinking the exact same thing. That unit gets pounded by rifle hunters b/c you can camp in some of it. Its kind of a wierd unit b/c guys who know it do well, they use the open roads and road pressure to their advantage. With no pressure the elk are wider spread, once the pressure hits the elk are always in the same areas. I havent spent enough time in there to figure it out.

Theres some good walk in stuff in Ryderwood which is the adjacent to the South of Williams Crk. All of the roads over there are gated, pretty much every one.

From what I have seen over the years down there is that I definetly wouldn't waste my time elk hunting that unit.  But if that's what you want to do have fun.  There is alot of land you can drive and there is a bunch that's gated.  I think that area has been hit pretty hard by the mexican poachers.

B-Dub,

Yeah your right I was thinking 672 Fall River. I always get those two units mixed up. I know there are a decent amount of elk in the south end of 673 but I have never stepped foot in it. The unit I was talking about was Fall River.

We hunt it for archery for the last 20 years. It has gone down hill in the last 5 years. atleast where we hunt. I hear it will be all gated off this year. That combined with a guy last year saying our camp was going to be leveled for the logs. Now we dont have a nice cool shaded camp spot. So i think this is the year we go elsewhere...

I will say this the DNR land is always open, but warehauser seems to close their land every year right about sept 5th for fire danger, no vehicles allowed.  doesn't mean that someone wont drive by you, but they have been patroling and handing out tickets the last 5 years.

WE were also told our spot would be leveled.  The storms and blow down have ruined a lot of the unit, and they plan on logging a crapload to salvage what they can from them.  There are still lots of elk they just like to hide :-)  killed a cow last year on my RNR first day first 30 min :-)

Dont get me wrong. I like gates too. But were we go its 12.6 miles from the hatchery. Im not willing ride 12.6 miles in all up hill. Especialy for what we been seeing in there the last  few years.
