Anyone been up to the alpine lakes yet??
« on: June 28, 2011, 04:25:28 PM »
Im thinking about hiking up to joe lake by snoqualmie pass this weekend. I was wondering if anyone has been up in the high country yet, and if the lakes are ice free? Any info would be great! By the look of it, there might still be snow on it. But it might be worth a try. :dunno:

 Thanks, Joe

Been up in the Alpine Lakes several times the last few weeks. Seems like everything East of Olallie  (sp) and Pratt lake still have a ton of snow around 4k. Have fun! Not sure about the east side of the mountains though.

The PCT trailhead at Alpental still has snow in the parking lot.  I can't imagine any lake above 4000' thawed out yet.  And it's only a few days until July...

I've been on both sides and there is just enough snow (slush) to make it a PITA. Just west of Snoqualmie, Lakes Talapas and Olallie were only half covered in snow a few weeks ago but there was 3+feet of snow to walk on half way up to Talapus.

East side above Lake Cle Elum was so wet that it was like wading up stream in a small creek (that was the trail).  My favorite part was falling through the snow when the water melted away all but the top inch or so.

Really nice up there just don't forget the waders...

As of last weekend  you still couldn't drive to the parking lot at the Mt. Pilchuck trailhead. It's not the ALW I understand, but it's close.

Yea, the snow is still deep in most of all the mountains. I went up Rainier last weekend and many of the campsites in the White River Campground still had 2-3ft of snow in them. We were on snow almost the whole way up the Glacier Basin Trail too.

I hiked up to the top of Granite Mountain last sunday and there was snow for the upper 1.5 miles. I was also at Annette lake (right accross the interstate from Granite mountain trailhead) and it was still 75% frozen and surrounded by snow. Talapus should be open but anything higher will still have some ice. Annette wouls be fishable but only a small portion. Good Luck, I say go for it just stay at as low of elevation as the lakes allow.

North Fork of Teanaway last week still had ~ 3 feet in places at 5,500 feet.  South slopes are open for the most part out there.  Higher elevation 6-7k still had a lot of snow.

Took a couple 3 year olds up the Denny Creek trail to Slippery Rocks to play in the water and there was a pretty fair amount of snow in spots a half mile from the trailhead. The Slippery Rocks are at 2800' elevation and we were playing in the snow half way there from the TH. Talked to a ranger coming off the trail beyond the water slide and he said 2/3 of a mile from the rocks you should be prepared for winter conditions.

I have been to almost all the lower walk in lakes up White/Chinook passes and Manastash Lake(twice) and I'm about to start playing handball with my own excrement if I can't start getting into the high lakes soon.  I got to Shellrock Lake on White-once behind Spiral Butte there was huge snow, but fishing was decent.  There is an amazing amount of snow behind Dog Lake last Saturday for this time of year-primary access to the Tumac Plateau lakes.  The climb out of Clear Creek is probably open, but once up on the top, the snow will be epic.
