They are considering opening more public land on Whidbey up to deer hunters this year, as over 350 were killed by cars last year alone. However, because of the close proximity of homes to so many wooded areas, rifles are not allowed. That means they must be hunted with pistols, muzzle loaders, bows, or shotguns with slugs. I have a smoothbore slug barrel for my 870 with rifle sights, but I have never actually hunted with it - just some "plinking" and keeping it for home protection. I think this year I will try it out for deer season, but I need to know what kind of rifled slugs work well in smooth barrels. I have heard that the Truball slugs are pretty good, as well as the Brenneke rifled offerings. Does anyone out there have a favorite slug load that they would recommend I try? I want to get a few different types, so I can shoot them for groups before the season starts.
Thanks in advance for any opinions,
Chris
