trolling plates for your outdrive?
« on: July 06, 2011, 08:34:57 PM »
i got in a pinch last summer and had to sell my zodiac and kicker for some emergency $ and now, im kickerless. my main engine is a mercruiser 470 (i think its 180hp). just got the boat registered today, and am planning on running it this weekend.

now, ive fished with out running the kicker before, but i still had an outboard onboard, but i never have went out with out an aux. motor. the problem with just using my main is the rpms are too high once in gear and yes, ive lowered the rpms as low as i can get them, and it still is a little fast (when there is no current running)  somebody suggested towing a drogue/sea anchor/trash can to slow the boat down
but what im wondering is if they make a trolling plate for an outdrive that is worth a damn.

i had one on my old boat, but that only had a 15hp motor...

maybe i should just find a kicker...

catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.
Forget the bear spray, use wasp killer. Concentrated delivery stream, 10X the product, and only $3.00 on sale.

If you are going to fish much it probably wouldn't take long for a little 4-stroke kicker to pay for itself.  :twocents:
Depending of course on how much gas your main sucks down in a day.
The reason there are so many Ruger upgrades is because they're necessary.

I have a trolling plate on my 90hp Honda and I can troll at .5 mph according to my gps. It works great. I like it way better than my old kicker I used to have.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!

my main is a mercruiser 470 (half a ford 460), its 224CID, 170hp. its a 4 cylinder, and ive been able to run hard all over the san juans for 2 days straight on 50 gallons of fuel... im not sure im going to notice an increase in a fuel bill running my main at idle vs a kicker at 3/4-full throttle.

forgot to mention my outdrive is a pre-alpha 470 outdrive
