Wolf Hunting Videos
« on: July 10, 2011, 10:38:37 AM »
With wolf season coming up in Idaho I thought it would be good to have an informational topic to help out with the hunt.
First here's a video of some old time hunting in Russia, this won't be how we need to hunt in Idaho, but it certainly is interesting to watch.

Wolf hunting in Russia - Pathé Frères 1910

In this video the mongolian does a pretty good job of howling, use this as a locate, from what I am told, occasionally wolves will come to howling.

Kain, I was just getting ready to add that video of the caller and noticed you posted it. I do have a couple comments, first, I would put some white camo around the player and I would call in an area with some cover, predators do not like to enter wide open areas as well as areas with some cover, next I noticed a difference in the portion of the video when the wolf was running in, there is a raven squaking in the background, makes me think there was bait involved. Great idea, but the video is a little misleading if he used bait and is trying to make everyone think that only the electronic caller brought in the wolf. Perhaps he used a combination. I'm not quite sure if bait or electronic callers will be legal in Idaho, but it could be beneficial if legal. Lots of guys who are bear baiting in Idaho have a lot of wolves hitting their bear baits. I have heard that it may be legal to shoot wolves at a bear bait but not bait specifically for wolves, we will know for sure when the regs come out.

I like the fact that he shows everyone the need to cover in white to match his surroundings.

The next video is better, seems like the way it happened.

The wolf lollypop video, now that's the method that I am going to use....  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I dont think bait was involved.  Reese is a pretty stand up guy from everything I have heard and is a pro caller.  Ravens come to my calling all the time.  I agree about the camo and open spaces.  It is hard to hunt areas with cover because animals really dont like to expose themselves if they dont have to.  I dont know how deep in Alaska he is either.  Remote areas that have never been called might be much easier to get a wolf to come in.

Everyone is going to need some music to listen to on the drive to Idaho.

Fortunately my area in southern Idaho doesn't have any wolf packs, so I am looking for another area in wolf country. I am definitely not complaining about not having wolves, but I am looking at an additional area in wolf country.

If I have time, I would like to do some hunting/trapping for myself this winter.  :twocents:
