First poults of the season
« on: July 09, 2011, 10:26:40 PM »
Saw my first batch of poults this season yesterday.  Found two hens and a jake.  When I came around the corner the poults were all huddled under one hen.  As I slowed the started running and then flew off the shoulder I always amazes me to watch them fly.

Now for the bad news.  A couple of minutes later I ran across a batch of about 6-9 hens and not a poult.  Today while we were out ran across another big batch of hens (about 7 mi as the crow flies from the other set) and none of them had poults either.

Finally!  Saw a hen Saturday in 113 with 6 poults, then another yesterday with 9.  All very small poults, not much bigger than maybe a really large baking potato

Cool, maybe they will all start showing up now, must have been the 2nd or even 3rd hatch.

That's what I'm thinking.  I've never seen poults that small this late into the year.  I know up around Springdale where I have property we were seeing poults in mid to late May, but they all seemed to have vanished by early June

We saw a nice flock of about 6-8 hens with perhaps 8-10 poults this weekend in Okanogan county. Just across the creek from them were two gobblers in a tree. Unfortunately (for me anyweys....heh...) these birds were not in the area I was scouting for my fall turkey tag. Still, always very cool to see birds and know they are in a general area. The poults were about the size of decent sized blue grouse. Maybe a tad smaller than that.
