Montana Big Game Combo Rule
« on: August 02, 2011, 08:58:28 PM »
Got an interesting letter from Montana yesterday stating that since I was unsuccessful in drawing for a special elk permit that I had an option to send in my Big Game Combo tag and could then have a Deer Combo tag and get a refund of the difference less a $25 fee.

This is a new law enacted by the legislature in order to get back some Elk tags to be reissued.

So I only applied for the Deer Combo to start and was unsuccessful. So I got a Combo point for that. I then purchased one of the leftover Big game Combos since I was about to lose my points for the special elk permits. I applied for a special bull permit and was unsuccessful. So I got another point for that.

So I called them to check if doing that surrender would do anything to my points that I acquired this year and the answer was no effect at all, I keep the points I have on the books.

I'm thinking about it since elk is not my primary interest anymore since I hunt by myself most of the time and am over the hill, 60 next week.

Seems like a great deal. I never have liked that in order to have a good chance of getting a deer tag, you had to pay for an elk tag too.

I recieved the same letter. I think they need more elk to feed the wolves. I'm keeping my elk tag though since I won't be hunting elk in this state.

That's a great deal. After I already drew two hard to draw elk tags elsewhere I was gonna turn my tag back in. But then I drew a Montana special elk tag in an area I've already hunted so now I have a lot of hunting to do.
