Hot feet
« on: August 06, 2011, 08:20:33 PM »
Has anyone ever used the body/foot powder from Hunter Specialties Scent a-way. My feet get so hot during early season that they sweat all day then oh boy  :yike: the boots stay out all night.  My son's boots are the worst.

Just curious what others might be using during the hot weather.  I have uninsulated boots (speed hunter 2) from Cabela's

        Thanks

Goldbond Medicated.  Use it for my feet and my man parts.  What type of socks do you use.  If you are using cotton socks that is a big part of your problem.  Never wear cotton socks, underwear or a cotton shirt.  Cotton is horrible.  Yes it is light but as a first underlayer it actually works against you.  Cotton absorbs moisture and does not wick it from your skin nor does it dry.  So what happens in the case of underwear and a T-Shirt you can get pretty bad chaffing.  As far as socks goes, like you mentioned your feet get extremely wet, can develope blisters and as you mentioned smell horrible.

If I was you I would look into buy a couple pair of high quality hiking socks made out of a synthetic material or made out of a very light wool.  Under Armour makes good socks and so does Smartwool.  I prefer a very light Merino Wool based light hiking sock.  Wool has AWSOME wicking properties and actually pulls the sweat from you feet keeping them dryer.  Also wool dries quicker than cotton and will not absorbe the odors like cotton does.  If you get some wool socks I GUARANTEE you that this will solve most of your odor and moisture issues.  The other half of the battle is every night before you go to bed rub some medicated footpowder on your feet and then dump some of it in your boots (a light coat) and then rub some more powder on your feet when you wake up.  Also dump a little bit in your socks before you go to sleep as well.  Ive attached a few that I like to give you an idea.

Here are two really good options for a hiking sock.

This is a Merino wool/Polyester blended sock. Made by Underarmour

I had the same problem during early archery east side, hated it.   I actually solved the problem by buying different shoes.  I now wear Merrell  Moab Ventilator mid hiking boots, they breath awesome.  The only shoe I've worn for work or hunting for the last 5 years. They are a little spendy ( it seems ) like what you get. $ 95.  They make a low and a mid, comfortable, supportive, & lets the air in. Obviously no water proofness or warmth but if your tired of wet socks these will cure it. Well made & last me a very long time.  All sporting good stores carry them, never on sale.   Mike

Thanks for the info guys. Just ordered some dead down wind powder and will get the socks suggested. I hunt the thick stuff so shins get beat up bad using the lower protection style boots. And can't stand getting swamp/muck hole water in my low rise boots.

I were the same boots you do. I use as stated above a pair if light weight wool socks. I carry an extra pair in my pack along with gold bond foot powder. My feet stay dry and comfortable.
