Dog Treats?
« on: August 09, 2011, 06:42:27 PM »
I dont know if anyone has any information on making dog treats but I figure I'll ask anyways.

I love to hunt and fish, and figure I could use some portions of the animal that I would normally not eat to make dog treats out of.  Anyone ever done this?  What organs/parts of the animals should I use?  I have a dehydrator as well.

Thanks,
Dan

Well at the risk of Blasphemy!!
We had a Golden Retriever's who had allergies, One of the meats he could eat was anything from the wild section.
My wife made handmade dog treats from Venison,Elk and Moose combined with wheat flour.
She made treats for close to 14 years for our dog's. I can only guess that this Spring when we get a new pup she will go back to her old ways.

I will cut the rib bones and other leg size bones off my big game and put it in the freezer for the dogs in the future. the dogs love it when we butcher an animal, they always get fresh meat as we cut  :chuckle:

I save the heart and liver out of all the birds I shoot and give them raw as treats to my dogs.  I have also taken the heart and liver from deer and given it to them raw as treats.  One time I made "Heart Snacks" by slicing and dehydrating a deer heart.  Packaged it up and take them along while out hunting to give the dogs a little boost throughout the day.  Also, when I'm butchering (deer, elk, beef, etc.) I save pretty much any scrap that would otherwise go in the trash and then grind it up like hamburger and put it in the freezer.  I take a package out of the freezer and use it to supplement their dry food in the morning.  My buddy has one of those jerky blaster guns and we have used my "dog" burger to make dehydrated snack sticks that we take to give our pointer during our hunts. So I pretty much save everything that I'm not going to eat and give it to my dogs.  With the way dog food prices are going up, I've been considering buying scrap red meat and switching my dogs to 100% or at least 50% raw meat.

So heart and liver are about the only organs I would end up keeping for the dogs?  What about the kidneys?  Just wondering if anyone had fed them to the dogs as well.  Thanks for the tips, I plan on dehydrating anything that I would give them, so that it would keep better and I could give it to them whenever instead of having to wait til it thaws.
