Finally took my 300 rum cdl to range

Hand loads Retumbo 180 gr nosler.
First shots out of the box could be covered with a 50 cent piece. Apparently, I guessed right about how many grains to use.
I am going to try 200 yards next.
BTW. We all agreed that I don't have to hit the elk. The muzzle blast and sound will cause the elk to have a heart attack.
Having a gunsmith boresight, was a good decision. At 100 yards, the rifle shot 1 inch to the right and at 3 oclock from the x on the bulleye.

The hard part now is to actually place the butt on my shoulder.
I had surgery, and was told not to shoot anything with a kick.
I have to get some clothing with a large and very thick patch on my shoulder.

I have to set up the chronograph to see exactly what the velocity is. It should be something around 3250.
At 300 yards, it still packs 3,000 foot pounds of energy, which is more than a 30-06 at the muzzle.
Some calculations I have seen say the kick is 50 ft-lbs.
As long as I have a one shot kill, I will not have to send out for a search party to find the remains of my shoulder.

You should really look into a limbsaver slip on pad. If it doesn't make the length to long it will really help with the kick. I have one on all mt mags. Even on some of my light rifles because I like the added length of pull on my stocks.

Install a muzzle brake, you can shoot that cannon all day long no problem.

Another option for taming recoil is one of those strap on your shoulder recoil pads. I love mine made by pace. Range day is a joy rather than an azzz whipping. Imagine acually enjoying shooting a 300 winnie with 200 grain partition. They do work. I know longer blink my eye and jerk the trigger simultaniously while blaming lousy ammo for the that dreaded flyer. Ha,Ha.
