2011 Hunt-WA Head Competition
« on: August 15, 2011, 06:35:06 PM »
Here are the rules for this year. I separated the two contests to help make the rules easier to understand. Please put your entries in this thread.

1) Cougar and legal bear species qualify.
2) The animal must be legally harvested in Washington State during the contest year.
3) The hunter must have a current WDFW hunting license and the tag used on the animal must have been purchased from the WDFW.
4) The hunter must submit an approved story of the hunt, picture of the animal, and claimed score on hunting-washington.com
5) The official B & C or P & Y scoring rules will be used.
6) The score that compares highest in percentage to the state record for that species and weapon wins. For example, a modern firearm black bear will be compared to the state record modern firearm black bear and an archery cougar will be compared to the record archery cougar. There will be three different weapon categories; modern firearm, muzzleloader, and archery. Washington Big Game Records will be used as the state records.
7) Prizes: A perpetual (or traveling) trophy will be awarded to the winner to keep for 11-1/2 months.
8) Hunters entering bear or cougar must be members prior to the season which it was harvested.
9) The competition chairman has the right to challenge any and all claimed scores. If there is no clear winner, the top entries will be required to get an official score.
10) Seasons will follow the WDFW hunting seasons, spring bear through the end of Cat season in March 2012 for the head competition.
11) ) An entry must include a photo of the animal, claimed score, and weapon used.

I talked with Donny Martorello yesterday 11-03-11, apparently our permit request was handed off and somehow overlooked, he said we do need the permit and he will get it coming to us. I will post here as soon as we get the permit and I will unlock the topic so you guys can start entering your animals.

We now have a permit to run this contest.

If you shot an impressive predator, post it up here. If you know other members who have shot a predator with a big melon, send them a PM to remind them to get their entry in.

I just wanted to add my bear in here since it seems that carpsniper2 is the only entry in this competition. My bear had a hanging weight of 198 pounds with the head and hide off. The head and hide weighed 58 pounds. I believe this bear was a true 300 pounder as the taxidemist said it would run that much also.

The day that I shot this bear was one of my most memorable days last year and there is a write up about it in the bear hunting section dated 8-26-11. I will try to copy and paste it here.

The reason that I can not enter it in the competition here is because the head shot destroyed the skull and it can not be measured accurately. Rasbo came over to help me try to get a measurement but it just was not in the cards.

carpsniper2's bear looks great and congratulations to him on a fine trophy!

I just wanted to add a little depth to this part of the forum.

My respectable bear and Rasbo (pic added)

« on: August 26, 2011, 06:53:55 AM »

I went hunting yesterday and and wound up getting what I would consider a respectable male bear. It started out by me getting out at first light and putting the boots to the ground. After about four hours of hunting I ran into this bear. I looked at him to make sure he was a decent size and had no cubs. I took my shot and he dropped like a bag of potato's. He did wiggle just for a moment and I have known of bears getting up and escaping so I drilled a second round into him.

This is where the day got interesting. I put out a call to three people for help and one showed up. It was, Rasbo to the rescue. We worked hard to get the bear to the rigs and it was getting pretty warm out. When we got to the rigs, I realized that I had lost my keys somewhere during the drag. We used Jim's rig and struggled to get this bear loaded. It was either a heavy bear or we are getting old, I think maybe a combination of both. Jim drove me and my bear into town, showed the guys at my shop a quick view and then off to the taxidermist we went. Jim also drove me home to find spare keys but low and behold they were in my locked car. (DANG) We wound up working until the evening breaking into my car to get into it without busting out a window up in the hills.

I opened up the bears stomach and it was just full of berries. The taxidermist scale would not go up enough to weigh the bear but he said conservatively it would go 300 pounds plus. He was going to weigh it as he dismembered it and get me a close weight on it. I should know later today when I pick up the meat for my local meat shop to process.

I truly want to thank Rasbo (Jim) for all of his help. Jim is a stand up guy and a true friend in need.

The guy in the picture is Rasbo. The pics are from my cell phone, my good camera was locked in my car (DANG)

bearpaw, I added mine in here to add a little depth to this section since there is only one entry. The skull was destroyed by a headshot with my 7mm ultra mag. It is amazing the damage one of those can do. Rasbo tried to help me get a measurement but it was not able to be measured accurately. If I should not have posted, I am sorry and feel free to remove my post. I just always like to add things that I feel will enhance this site.

That was a heck of a bear woodman! I remember it when it got posted. I love bears with white on there chest like that. Sad to here his head got so messed up. I shot my first bear we called in with a 300win at about 37yards. I messed his skull up a little but not to bad as I aimed for the base of the skull. You sure get a "dead right there effect" :chuckle:

Well I am very happy to have won the contest this year with such a fine animal. I don't know if I will ever take a washington bear that will be this big again. I am having Michelle make him into a rug. He had the best hair I have ever seen on a bear. I had told myself skull only! My buddy laughed at me when we were there getting ready to chunk him up to start packing him out. I grabbed him several times to take just his head but I talked myself into doing a rug :yike: ouch :chuckle: A great hunt with a great animal! With a great friend helping me pack him out and putting up with a house guest for a few days  Thanks Jerome

Happy another SKAGIT bear has claimed the title again and that great trophy will look good on the fire place.

Thanks Dan for doing the contest
