Calling at night
« on: August 22, 2011, 09:29:36 PM »
Im headed out for my second elk scouting trip in montana tomorrow, first one wasnt successful at seeing any elk but I saw every other game animal montana had to offer so im trying a new area. Anyways I plan on driving the forest roads at night and bugling to see if I can locate some animals that way. Will this get the bulls call shy? I dont plan on bugling them in just seeing if I can get some responses and marking it on the map and then checking it out during the day. I know its a little early but ive heard that some of the younger bulls have began to start talking a little bit over here and I would really like to locate some animals before the archery season starts.

We called to herd Fri. There were 3 bulls rounding up cows and they completely ignored us. Good luck.

I was in Kaposwin/Hancock today saw two really nice bulls and 6x6 and a 6x7 with a herd of cows.  Although we were bear hunting we gave out a locator bugle and the big bull bugled back.  Both bulls hard horned.  So I think it would be worth it for you to try.

Back when I used to hunt an area up behind rife lake I used to ride my bike in at 3:00am and bugle to locate, and then sit on the outskirts of the herds to see what they looked like in the morning. Sometimes this didn't work, I could be right on them while they were bedded up without any replies but as day broke they wouldn't be quiet. I guess it's just the luck of the draw some answer and some don't, just make sure you don't go calling like crazy I only gave it one shot then backed off. But you probably know all this. Good luck bud!!

When calling at night, I will try to sit for ten or fifteen minutes after turning the truck off to let things quiet down.  Sometimes one would bugle before I even tried to.  I would then sit for about the same amount of time after if I got a response, before leaving.
