What do you want to know about changing barrels. You Do Not need to have a gunsmith do it. I change barrels a lot on my Savage rifles . And also have a couple of Stevens rifles that I change barrels on. If you want to do it on the cheap you can use new unfired/sized cartridge case (not a loaded round just the case).
You will have to have a barrel nut wrench .
At
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=288765You can make your own action wrench out of a hardwood 2x6x8" drill a
1 5/16" hole in the center of the 6x8 side, drill a 1/2" hole on each side of the 1 5/16" hole on the 2" edge saw the block in half through the center of the 1 5/16" hole so you have 2 pieces 3"x8". Get some 1/2" all tread with 4 nuts and flat washers , to clamp it all down tight on your action right behind the barrel nut .
[bgcolor=#ff0000]DO NOT try to use a internal action wrench to take the nut off the first time!!![/bgcolor]If you savage is a older one with only one hole in the nut you can make a wrench to fit it or find a spanner wrench if you are lucky.
Send me a PM if you need more help.
Midway also sells barrels for savage rifles I have one of their's in 338-06. Shoots great.
