rabbit hunting at night.
« on: September 08, 2011, 10:55:58 PM »
I have a quick question.  A couple days ago I shot a rabbit. I could'be shot my limit, but it was 7:35 so I stopped shooting for the day.  But when I checked the regs. It says the hunting hours are only for birds.  So is hunting rabbits at night legal?

No.

"2011-2012 Official Hunting Hours for Game Animals and Forest Grouse*"

Rabbits are game animals.

You must have been looking at the bird regulation pamphlet? Hunting hours for upland birds and waterfowl go from 30 minutes before sunrise to SUNSET.

Hunting hours for animals other than upland birds and waterfowl are 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes AFTER SUNSET.

Remember that you CAN use lights for small game.  The timber is often really dark even after hunting hours have started and you can shine a flashlight to find those beady little eyes.

Quote
1. Hunting with artificial lights:
Hunting big game with the aid of an artificial
light or spotlight is prohibited.

I'm sure many others have a lot of good memories of shooting rabbits at night from the back of a truck. I started doing that in Oklahoma in 1970. Don't know what the regs here would say about it though.
