Where/when would you hunt Idaho for a wolf?

So my friend calls me up and wants me to go with him to hunt for wolves. He is looking for a black wolf pelt, he is part of a fire department Pipes and Drums. It is something that they put over their shoulders. He is going to go to the local Wildlife Office and try to get their data, for where they have the most numbers of black wolfs. I thought this would be a good place to ask for information. We are thinking of going early spring, since he and I both have plans for the next few months with deer/elk hunting.  I am seriously thinking about going since $200 seems like it is worth it to kill a wolf.

What unit would you go to?
What is the access like in that unit?
What rifle would you take with you?
Would you mount it and what type of mount?
He is looking at the Sawtooth Unit. He is doing a bit of resreach for this hunt, but I know some of you on here know bits of information also. Any information would be helpful. Thanks for everything. Of course if I go I will take lots of pictures for everyone on here. I am also talking to C_Money about making this trip with me.

Southern Idaho no doubt but for selfish reasons I would say around Calder.  There was a thread on here about a guide offering pack in full trip for a week and it was so cheap just to get the wolves killed so he can get his livelyhood back.

I am definately planning on an Idaho Wolf/Lion hunt sometime at the beginning of 2012. I most likely will use an outfiitter, As far as my main weapon goes, 22-250! I always take a back up rifle .243.

West of pierce, all of north Idaho. The locsha and lolo are getting thin with lowered elk numbers. Winter around whitebird, riggins...find elk and you have wolves. I took this a week ago near pearce.

Use tough bullets if using a 22. Some of these dogs are banging on of not passing 200#

22-250 yes. .223, well lets just say I dropped a yote (and I mean it dropped like a stone) one time at about 100 yds, it got up and spun around about three times and ran off. I never found it. 22-250 is my go to rifle for predators.

I would not feel under gunned with a 223. But.....leave the varmint bullets for coyotes.

Well in 2 weeks while im in the panhandle chasing elk, i wont feel undergunned with the ol 300 win mag and 180 grains if thAT BLACK YOTE COMES ACROSS!!!!

I've been looking into it as well. I have put a lot of time into searching for the best areas myself. This one is going to be kept to myself since I did all the work. None of my dipstick friends want to go. Can't find anybody to go with to share expenses. I bought a 257 Weatherby Magnum for them thar wolves.

I live just off of I-90, your more than welcome to stop by on your way over to ID for your wolf hunts and if you need company I'd be more than happy to tag along.  I will be hunting over there most weekend for the rest of the year except the middle of Oct and then I'll be down in TX attending my son's graduation from Boot Camp.  But I'll be over there nearly every weekend from now until March.

Im not a big supporter of long range hunting, although I wont get into an argument of "ethics" over it...but for wolves do what ever you guys can to get those things under control!

Fred, ever need a pard, I live at the stateline @ 90. I pretty much make a trip to idaho every weekend myself. I have no issue sharing my wolf Intel as I plan on selling the pelt and donating the income to help the elk.

Awesome, anytime you want to go just shoot me a PM.  I have a hound permit so in Dec I will be running lions as hard as I can, trying to get a good tom up a tree before the 31st.  After that, Jan through March we should chase wolves as much as possible, so anytime you want to go.  I'm hoping to have a ATV with tracks by 1 Dec so we should be able to get around reall well later on this winter. Get in on some wolves that have not been harrassed much!
