1st thing to do is Thank all the people who volunteered scouting info & hospitality. While productive areas we saw elk in during scouting we ended up where the biologist suggested. 2nd thing is hunting in the rut is freakin awesome! Never done that before & want to do it again but think that would mean switching to archery or drawing a killer tag.
Just like the commercial, our saying was “This place is going off” with all the bugling going on everywhere. In the end we got in between 2 bulls. A satellite bull with a big 6 point normal side & a freak spike with 3 smaller points out of the base on the other. We called the small one (relatively speaking) in & some more cow calling brought the big bull as he must have thought he was stealing a cow. We could hear him getting closer until he was screaming just yards away. Brother Ron who has the tag whispers, “What time is it?” I check & it’s 7:15. Look at my other brother filming the freak who’s bugling about 50 yards away. Ron sees the big one & asks me if he’s a shooter. His head is behind a tree & I can see the back of the horns & say “it looks like a huge 5 point” a minute later he steps out with giant tops & say “Oh yeah he’s a good one” shot goes off & the camera is still on the freak. DOH. By now it’s getting dark fast. We can see the elk down but his head is swaying so we wait till he expires, & there was much rejoicing. Now the work begins & it’s about 8pm. Got er done & everything to the truck (except a knife I lost in the dark) @ 2:30 am. Back at camp we thought would be a big party but too tired. A little food, a couple beers, snort of whiskey & its 4 am. Time to crash.

I was hoping that you actually killed the dreaded "HUG" monster that tormented me during childhood... but that giant bull is a good consolation prize!
