They stay high until snow. Youll find small herds on the border of private property down low and in some of the deep dark canyons up on top. You gotta get into the timber.....

I wouldn't worry too much about not seeing any.
You hang in the Gnat to Tamarack to Watt area and the rest of the pumpkins will have them runnin' by ya with there tongues hanging out.

:bash: Unfortunately there are a MILLION during general modern.    Guys will all complain about hunters in an area, but hey,  thats where the elk are.  Just be sure of your backstop....one a them punkins could be ME.   Cow tag in there is USUALLY an easy fill.  Just get out of the truck

Best of luck
If hunting was easy, they'd call it killing....

Traditionally, 340 has one of the highest elk hunter numbers of any GMU in the state for the modern season.
You definitely won't be alone.
Like most anywhere though, get off the road a little ways and you stand a chance of making it a hunt instead of a pass shooting event.
You stay West of Tamarack and at least your primarily on Nat Forest land which eliminates the ATV road hunters.

:twocents: I've hunted there for many yr's. And have killed 5 spike's,2 cows.I don't hunt there anymore just to many aholes for me. BUT here's the scoop, inbetween watt and robinson canyon,3/4 to a mile up from the elk fence, there are two draws, small, but they do go there. I hit it every afternoon, till dark.and most everyone is back at camp by 10;30 or noon. so take your ruck and water, snacks and hang. use your bics. They will come!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! why drive around like everyone else in the afternoon,B/S *censored*'s.We would park one rig at each canyon and walk to the other rig.I'm 65 now and still hunt duuu! I now stay in the timber, you got to go slow lol,... 8) ;)

He`s right and every other hunter in that area does the exact same thing. Good chance in filling a tag once there running. But you can bet if you see them there`s 10 others that see them. If there`s a spike in there it will sound like a war. :chuckle:

Really ? just find a funnell of timber crossing a ridge from tammerak to robinson and wait for one to come running by with her tongue out .

Been up the last few weekends. Lot of camps that aren`t usually in there set up. Figured it`s the extra tags or the road closures that has them in there early. No elk :sry:but did hear of a kitty at the gate 10 min. before we went in. Guess he was trying to get out of the fence. He won`t last long come the weekend.

There are elk all over that unit. I was in there yesterday mushroom hunting and saw over 30 elk. Cow tag is an easy fill. Find a good funnel area and sit. They will be pushed past you.
