columbia river set up
« on: October 07, 2011, 04:36:31 PM »
I plan on hunting the Columbia this year.  We have a 19' boat and have been out before.  I started thinking of our decoy set up and was wondering if all mallards works well enough or would other decoys be better?  Any thoughts??

Thanks

Its always nice to have a bit of variety I think but really it doesn't matter as much as some think. I've killed limits of mallards over nothing but honker dekes.  so go with what you got and see what you think but you should be ok. maybe some bluebill dekes for longer visibility

Last year I bought some oversized bufflehead decoys for attractors and think they really helped out. You can see them twice as far as just plain mallards. Like said before a little variety never hurts.

There are no more ducks or geese on the Columbia. They all flew to lakes and ponds. Sorry for the inconvenience  :chuckle:

Wigeon or Bluebills due to visibility and they are confidence on teh Columbia in my opinion because those are the main birds that raft up and there are a lot of them all over.. any birds will decoy to Mallards, Wigeon, and Bluebills..  :twocents:

someone also said coots, those are a great confidence type decoy.. any time you see a raft of ducks, a majority of them are coots... ducks tend to lean towards them..

canvasback or bulebills are gonna help not only with the confidence builder but the white on the canvasback will catch a bird eye better than a mallard. :twocents:
