Spent day at Snoq Tree Farm
« on: October 08, 2011, 08:32:59 PM »
I spent the day out there driving the area through the 10 gate, didn't see another vehicle.  Saw one huge beautiful black bear, he was packing the mail!  Didn't see any deer, but lots of sign.  I'm a former rimrock country muley hunter, turned blacktailer wanna-be....  I saw this stuff you all call reprod.  How on earth do you hunt that crap?  How many of you seasoned blacktailers carry a machete?  (seriously thinking of getting one before next weekend).  I didn't find any newer clear cuts, most of them that I saw there were overgrown with 6 foot tall weeds and brush.  Not totally sure what the upcoming season will hold for me, but a guy has to start somewhere.

See you out there next weekend.. I'm in a white ford crew cab P/U with a black canopy.

Steve

Where theres a will theres a way! In all seriousness I dont know how they hunt it either besides either A) Walking up overgrown skids until you see something or B) getting to a vantage point and glassing. When i hunt on the westside I hunt timber fringes and open mixed timber terrain and newer clear cuts that you can actually glass. I never go into reprod theres just no easy way I can see to hunt it. The following two pictures are what you should be looking for (as far as good blacktail habitat) if your not going to hunt an open clearcut and dont want to tromp around in reprod. I have had much better luck looking in areas where there are tall deciduous trees (alder, maple)

Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional

The thing is about reprod is that the deer are in there because people wont go in there...   :twocents:

I hunted the westside for the first time in August on a bear hunt by my busdy's place in Bellingham and all I can say is damn, its like a jungle over there.

My friend had cut a path to his stand and without being 16 feet if the ground, a guy would not be able to see a thing in the old clearcut we were hunting. Hats off to the guys that hunt this stuff succesfully.
