Finally!!! now with pictures.
« on: October 20, 2011, 12:26:29 AM »
so i have been "lurking" around here for about a year and a half and putting my  :twocents: in every now and then, but i would really like to thank every single member on here that has posted the great amount of information on all aspects of the hunt.  last year was my first year in the field as all of my outdoor experiences were either on a boat on on the banks of rivers, lakes and streams.  saw lots of deer last year but never had the opportunity to shoot.  not discouraged as i feel hunting requires vast amounts of patience just like fishing had taught me i went out this year again not expecting to shoot but to have the opportunity to.  WELL TODAY WAS THAT DAY FOR ME!!

but i will give the story first.  went out opening day and didn't see a single deer, not for a lack of trying mind you.  day two comes around and we get to the "spot" our usual hour early and as it is becoming just light enough to see out in the distance me and my partner see movement.  sadly all we can see is 4 deer with antlers but not enough visibility to see if they are legal to shot or not.  so we close the distance and are only able to verify that they are forked horns but big forked horns at that.  this happens again on days 3 and 4, but on day 4 instead of following them we decided to watch where they disappeared to.  about after 15 minutes when they disappeared we decided to give chase, and that didn't end up producing either but one has to try anything right???  well that night my wife calls and says my son has a fever and she needs me to come home and watch the kid so she can go into work and make her lesson plan in the morning for her substatue teacher  :bash:.  so i am oh great i have to miss out on the prime morning but i am a firm believer in family first so i did what needed to be done.  i think this was the secret mojo i needed.

so my wife gets home at 7:30 and i make it to the spot an hour later and I'm to late didn't see a single animal.  so i go out walking hoping to catch a straggle that was to slow getting where it wanted to go but that didn't work out.  so at 11 i decide it is time to go to the truck for a snack.  on my way some strange urge came upon me to go thru this spot of thick nasty brush.  upon entering i find a pile of super fresh droppings and upon further inspection it was even still warm!!!  so i put the binos away and get the rifle in the ready position.  about 10 paces into this mess i look to my left and see a huge pair of ears and then find horns.  and all i see is another forked horn so we look at each other for what seemed to be forever and he turned his head slightly and that was all i needed to see, that 3rd little point!!!  so i put the crosshairs on him and bang.  he went about 20 feet and pilled up, and i have my first deer!!!  first pick is how he laid when i came up on him after the shot, and the rest are pretty self explanatory.

again i cannot thank the members of HuntWa enough for the amazing information and knowledge i have gained from you!!!  thanks again!!!

Matt
