Teanaway ( Sons First Hunt)

I am taking my son out this weekend for his first ever Deer Hunt and plan to head to Teanaway. My question is if anyone has any honey holes or decent areas they would share in order to help a 12 year old bag his first deer. I really would appreciate any help and can assure you he will hunt safe and ethically. I have killed my share but I think the best hunt day a dad can have is watching his (son-or -Daughter ) take there first animal. Thanks for any help you share.

I was up there for 3 days last week an didnt see a single deer, but a buddy an his son whacked two bucks on the north side of blewett on the camas crk turn off, might be worth looking at.

Just a idea if you go to gmu 124 it is any white tail deer for youth and there is a ton of them out there i went to hight school out there and i would see them all most every day.

I appreciate the info so far, how far of a drive is gmu 124 from tacoma. Also is there any state land to hunt in that gmu

Sounds to me like you need to put a little more time in prior to the deer season.  No one has given me anything when it comes to finding a good spot to hunt.  My advice to you is.  If it is that important to get your kid a deer you should put in a lot more time trying to find a spot for him to kill a good buck.  There are tons of oppertunities for youths to kill deer.  If you are a serious hunter you should know that nothing comes easy and that it takes some serious miles on the boots to find the spots where deer hang out. .  There are lots of good spots in the teanaway!!

spent the whole season up in teanaway on north fork road, we were camping up on a side road at 6.5 miles +/-, we had a Doe (so i thought) crash into the river and blaze its way through camp as we were all sitting at the camp fire talking about our day in the hills, came into camp like it was a hunter to talk crap about the other guy. well while it was crashing water i stood and reached for my .44 (that i left in the tent  ) ended up the next morning i put on the rubber boots and crossed the river to check its tracks out and see what direction it headed, it was a full groan buck, Huge in size but missing antlers for some reason. its neck was huge and body was atleast 5 years old. couldnt figure out why it had no antlers but oh well. it was still shooting time too so if i had taken a shot at it it would have been legal, but not being able to see its altlers nobody wanted to take the risk.

didnt see any other deer for days until we wanted to locate deer bedding down in the dark with BRIGHT lights, left all the firearms locked in the trailer and headed up the hill to find the deer motels. located a group of bedded deer and went there the following morning, but we jumped into the woods too far down below them.  and didnt see anything all day but tracks.

our buddy went up top and came down to them and was sitting with the doe as they woke up. He just walked in at the spot he seen them all lying down and found a stump.

for some reason there wasn't many deer up the the north fork this year.  The middle fork and the west fork were holding tons of deer.  Kind of wierd. could be the wolves.  Saw lots of tracks up that way.

im pretty much done with NF Teanaway, my worn out spine doesnt like the steep hills too much.

if i manage to go back there next year, i hope to hit the east (yellow top) on a motorcycle and go WAY up alone and sit on a hidden stump recliner someplace.
woman at teanaway mercentile said i could probably be able to get permission to head up behind the store and hunt turkeys though.

If any of you guys know where some cool rocks are and don't care, I'd love to hear about it.   I have a little rockhound and am looiking for some haunts.    I went up the middle fork a bit to look for some Teanaway agate.   I found one good piece.  I was going to haul her up there pretty soon.   If not, no biggie.  We will find rocks!

as for deer, most are being rendered and returned back to mother earth in the form of wolf crap.

Bone hit the west fork just go to the end of the road and walk the creek down lots of rock and if that don't work go across the creek till you hit the road and walk the road west tons of if back there.

I went up the middle fork a bit to look for some Teanaway agate.   I found one good piece. 

can you post a photo of that please? i found a nice chunk of blue green agate looking rock, really looks more like rough uncut emerald though.

I will.   Teanaway agate is red and yellow.  "lots" of other agate around though.  She found her first ellensburg blue last week.  Not very big, but she was sure excited.   She also found a kickass blue crystal. Just laying there out in the open.  I'll start a rock thread so we don't hi-jack this one.   I figured the teanaway boys might look at this one though.

the blue crystal is Ellensburg blue, its rare and HIGHLY saught after for jewlery.

Spent all week up there near Iron Creek and Bear Creek. Saw a ton of deer very few legal bucks. There were 3 nice bucks taken while i was up there and a kid (20-ish) and his friend shot a friggen 2 point. I watched that deer for about 20 minutes to make sure he had no eye guards or i would have popped it. It didn't so he walked.. These 2 young guys go by as i am on the teanaway ridgetrail and i said whats up and they said hey and then about 100 yards later i hear this boooom and then a second boom... I radioed my buddy and said i would take a look.. As i got closer to where i thought the sound came from i could still smell the gun powder in the air.. I looked through the tree's and saw the two boys but as i walked up by the kill they were gone. I looked at the deer and it was the 2 point i had been watching in the bowl..The kid who shot it actually came back and i said It's a fricken 2 point!!! and he says "I thought it had an eye guard" I said you don't fricken think it has an eye guard and just shoot the thing what the F? He was a very confused and distraught over what he had done and what he was going to do now especially when he got such a strong reaction from me. I have buddies who have spread their dads ashes in those canyon's as their families have hunted many many years there and quite frankly they would likely drag that kids arse through the mud if they seen him draggin a 2 point... I gave him a lot of things to think about as a young man and the situation he has created for himself and the internal issues he will deal with, when he gets back to camp (dad is there and would be pissed if he knew) when his buddy leaks the story one day and just the myriad of emotions that follow you when you have done something wrong and can't fix it. I hope for that young man he listens to the things i told him and he grew a little that day..He was not my son but he was sure taking it in as if he was. He made a big mistake and as pissed off as it made me puttin a beat down on him was not going to change what had already happened, but it does help explain another reason we can't smash a legal deer up there anymore..
If i could offer one piece of advice for those introducing younger family members into the hunt game..Make sure they are well rehearsed on all the requirements and that acting on something with a gun (a .270) BEFORE you are certain is unacceptable, against the law and won't be tolerated
