Author Topic: Buckmark vs Ruger 22/45 (Read 6036 times)

So Im in the market for a 22, so I went to check them out today and I have two in mind. The buckmark is a great little gun, but the ruger seems to be really comparable and a few dollars less. I was just wonder if anyone on here has an opinon on either. Thanks in advance

I wish I could be more of a help to you. I really like Ruger. But that is in the six gun flavor.

Having a fair bit of experience with a Ruger MKKIII 22/45 (tons actually) and Ruger's non-existent customer service I would say to go with the Buckmark! Some people get lucky and get a gun that works without issue, others like me get a gun that is a problem child that ends up needing to be gone through from one end to the other due to extremely shoddy machining.

If you like revolvers you might have a look at the Heritage Specials, I got one and it seems like a real nice little gun although the "fixed" front sight will need some massage work with a file and possibly a little bending.

Of the 2! I would for sure go with the buckmark. Great shooting little guns. I run a target model MKII for a competition gun. They are great guns as well but I 2ND the thoughts on there customer service that FC has stated. They get a F!

Between the Buckmark and the 22/45, I'd get the Buckmark. The 22/45 felt cheap to me. FWIW, I went with the MKIII Hunter a few years ago when I bought a 22 pistol. It's more accurate at 100yds than most of my 22 rifles.

I have not handled a Buckmark, but I want one. I have a 22/45 hunter, and I am pleased with its accuracy and reliability. Disassembly/reassembly is kind of a PITA, and you have to remove the bolt to pass a cleaning rod from breach to muzzle. This is not so much more so than with the Buckmark from what I can tell watching videos.

Another thing to note is that the barrel/breach is the serial numbered "firearm" on a 22/45. So if you are looking at something like a Tactical Solutions lightweight barrel, it would have to go through a FFL if not an in-state private transaction. That's another benefit of the Buckmark, IIRC.

Incidentally, I was shooting Remington Thunderbolt bulk wax coated lead .22 LR in the 22/45 hunter, and after about 200 rounds the barrel leaded up so bad that, when I recognized it (accuracy degraded) and cleaned out the barrel, I pushed a barrel-swaged sliver of lead out of the barrel. Not cool. Found the video below when researching it. Now, I only shoot CCI mini-mag copper washed .22LR, and I have had no further issues.

@Flound3rz, I shoot just about anything but Remington bullets through my 22's, all of the Remmy bullets seem to lead barrels up badly just like your picture there. Try the Armscor 22lr, it's accurate, cheap and doesn't foul barrels like the Remington stuff.

I have two Rugers, a pre-Mark and a MarkII with Volquartzen internals and a Buckmark.
The Buckmark is easily my favorite.
Better ergonomics for me, better trigger.
Easy choice.

I have a mark 1, a mark2, and a 22/45.. problem rugers are pretty rare in my experience.. I'd go with ruger.

Check Google on that one, they are quite common. Look at all the services Volquartzen offers to fix them for that matter. That bolt polishing service is a good one, it's not for looks!

You honestly wouldn't be bad off with an older Ruger either, Mark I's and II's are pretty readily available on gunbroker and such, they are significantly higher quality than the Mk III 22/45.

I have a couple MKII's and much beter quality than the new Rugers. Go with a Buckmark if buying new

I have both the Ruger 22/45 and the Buckmark, both are good right out of the box but the Buckmark has a better feel and is most certainly more accurate. I prefer the ergos on the Buckmark over the Ruger also.

I have a two Rugers 22/45 & Mark111, also have the Browning Buckmark all are fun to shoot, the Buckmark seems to be my favorite to shoot, just a better feel and it is a tack driver. That said I also have a S&W 617 a little more money but a great shooter, nothing beats a good wheel gun. Which ever one you decide you won't be disappointed you will need to find the ammo that works beast for you. I find that I have better luck with the CCI 40gr. I don't shoot 36 gr ammo it seems to not cycle through after a full day of shooting.

:)I prefer the standard ruger to the 22/45. on the 22/45 I keep hitting the mag release, guess I am a klutz.
I prefer the Ruger to the Buckmark.

I have a Pre mk1 and never had an issue I can't speak for the newer ruger. I handled and shot a buckmark and they are a fine gun, I would think if new go buckmark but if you can snag a older tiger I would do that

One reason a I leaning toward the buckmark is the feel. The grip seems to be alot more comfortable to me. From everything I have read they both seem really good shooters, I will look into the older rugers as well. Once again, thanks for all the replies fellas
