Little critters give away your position?
« on: October 23, 2011, 04:06:13 PM »
So a couple of days ago my buddy and I are moving up a ridge looking for deer. We stop half way up to take a break and during our rest stop we start hearing something crashing through brush. We listened for a few minutes and it sounded like it was getting closer so we get our rifles ready. All of a sudden this chipmunk starts letting out this screech about ten feet from where we were sitting and just would not shut up. I've often had this happen with squirrels, chipmunks, crows etc that seem to sound an alarm for all the other critters to let them know somebody is in the area.

I was never really sure before if those screeches really had any warning affect on game animals but whatever that was crashing through brush, stopped as soon as the 'munk started screeching. I guess there is nothing you can do about it, but just wondered if anyone else has had this happen and do you guys think these critters are really sending out a warning to big game?

If your paying attention they can also sometimes let you know where the critters are...

 I agree with this reply.

I have seen deer pop out places that chipmunks were just chirping at. It is not solid, set in stone that when you here one in the distance that it is a deer or elk, but sometimes...

I have also set off chipmunks, and shortly after, sneaked up on deer, and the chipmunk is still chirping and the deer were not looking that direction.

I guess what I am saying is my feeling on it, do not worry if you set one off but if you hear one and you know that he is not chirping at you, then that could pay dividends.

I used to hate those little guys for that but now I welcome them. Besides, if you ever get bored out there, they are fun to watch.

I always pay attention to what the critters are saying, squirrels, ravens whatever. If they are not telling on me, they are telling on something else.

My experience with the "little critters" this past week hunting.  While stalking around the woods those little guys will lite up on you almost every time.  While still hunting and remaining motionless many time they will wander up on my to within a foot or two.  When this happens and if I haven't moved they finally realize something isn't right and they look at me for a moment and then haul ass the other way.  Strangely enough when this happens they usually don't get on their chattter box, they just clear the area.  As for the other critters we are looking for, in this case deer, the deer do listen to those little chattering critters.  Case in point, on second day of modern season I set up on a rub line I found thinking that buck would be checking on his territory at some point.  Well, at 5:20 pm this pig of a whitetail comes strolling out very cautiously grazing and headed toward the little stand of hardwood.  About 10 minutes pass as he is approaching the rub line and eating away this squirrel sounds off back in the woods.  The deer raised up and looked back toward the noise very interested in what it was all about.  He studied the area behind him for two or three minutes until the squirrel shut up and he was satisified there was no threat behind him.  Sadly for the deer, his threat was to his left where me and my rifle were hiding out :chuckle:,..... he was down at 5:42 pm.  I pay more attention to the squirrels these days. :twocents:
