What electronic call should I buy?
« on: November 25, 2011, 07:45:27 PM »
I am leaning towards the pm4. We dont hunt coyotes alot, but with as many as we have seen lately we want to start thinning them out a little better. Any advice will be greatly appreciated, especially when spending that kind of money. Thanks
Blake

Send Bearmanic a PM as well.  There are some really good calls out there as well.  I also think a PM to Rainshadow would be worth a PM as well.

Don't mean to jack your thread but what call is best to buy if $ is an issue. I can't justify spending $600 for a call for my first one

If you spend $200 on your first (and second) caller you will wish you had saved and spent more the first time.

I would suggest using hand calls until you have enough money to buy a solid call that will last for many years instead of a lower quality caller that will not make you happy.

I use my own hand call's and a Foxpro Fury. I will be calling cougars today so at times it's nice to have the sound away from me. They have cheaper Foxpro's Rick

Predator hunting super store. will give you a great idea on electric calls. you can get what sounds you want on a foxpro. Check out there list.

The PM-4 is a pretty good machine and the sounds that are availible for it are some of the best in the industry.  Before I bought my Minaska I used a standard PreyMaster made wireless with a camcorder sound system and it work very well on coyotes but my set up was complicated to run, but those JS sounds did call coyotes.

For an under $200. call the FP Spitfire works well, two of my hunting partners use them and I've used one of theirs on hunts and they work.  If you buy from  www.allpredatorcalls.com/pages/FOXPRO-Spitfire.html  They will program it with the calls of your choice.  If you have Cabelas discounts the stock sound a very serviceable.

I like the Minaska M-1 and the FP Scorpion, smaller units but plenty of sound for my style of calling.

One thing to remember an E-caller is not a magic machine, with the right set up you can call coyotes with just about any sound source.  Aproach to the stand, scent control(use of the wind, you cant fool a coyotes nose with cover scents) and having a good idea where the coyote will approach from are what make a successful coyote hunter.

AWS
After the first shot the rest are just noise.

Make mine a Minaska

Thanks for the input guys. So between the spitfire and pm4 which one would you choose. I like the fact that you can get the spifire pre programmed with calls of your choice.

I picked a spitfire up for about $100, for that price if I didn't like the sounds I could buy more and still come out ahead.  The only difference between the spitfire and wildfire seems to be the sound changing after the shot thing and I don't know what difference that would make.  Check out Ebay or CL, try to find a seller with real good rep.

Don't forget that foxpro sells refurbished ones. Their customer support is amazing from what I hear so I wouldn't worry about quality on their refurbs.

You can call in just as many yotes with a mouth call from Bearmanric or Rainshadow....maybe even more.  Get a good decoy, like the mojo and just use you mouth calls.  Can't go wrong.

:)An electronic caller is a good tool to have for predators, not a perfect end all answer. I think I kill a few more coyotes with electronic than  mouth calls every year.
Go to the Foxpro site, they have refurbished and in the forum used callers. Foxpro stands behind the product.
another option if you hunt with a partner is to take turns calling and shooting, one guy is the "remote caller" and one guy the shooter. I have laid down flat on my back in a flat wheat stubble field, no place to hide, and been the caller for a guy that could hide a little ways off. It works. Do not shoot your caller!! :chuckle:
