Ellie's First Buck (In her own words)
« on: December 04, 2011, 10:58:29 PM »
Thanks again to the Fishers. Awesome of you guys to give access to Ellie for a lifetime memory.

 Here is her story.

It was a cold Sunday morning. Even through my scarf that I had tied around my face, my breathe was a warm white cloud. I was on Decatur Island, part of the San Juan Islands. Ed was the guy that my dad and I were staying with and he had driven us out on his boat. This year had been way better that last year’s boat ride! Last year there were 5 to 6 foot waves, and a lot of water was splashing over the bow. At first it was really fun, like a roller coaster ride. But when it came to getting the boat on the ramp, it was a nightmare! The waves kept pushing it off so the boat was sitting on the side of the ramp. Thank goodness Ed and his wife Kelly, who had come to meet us, knew what they were doing and got the boat right but we almost lost a duffel bag in the process.  They drove us back to the house and I got to meet their kids, Maddie and Zoltan. After we got settled in my dad and I went for three hunts over the weekend, but didn’t get anything. We saw a lot of deer, but they were mostly does.
Anyway, back to this year. It was really cold that morning so my dad and I didn’t stay in the blind as long as we hoped to. My dad suggested for me to bring my Kindle with me so that in the afternoon, I would get lost in my book- which happens a lot- and we could stay in the blind longer because I wouldn’t notice the cold. I had finished my book about two hours later and still no deer had come by our hiding place. We stayed for another half an hour but still nothing came our way. We decided to go and walk around a little before back to the house; I was really disappointed because that was my last day. That’s right, Sunday. But just as we were getting up my dad pushed me back down on the log I had been sitting on, and said to me “Ellie there’s a doe right in front of us!” oh boy this was the moment I had been waiting for ever since I started hunting! My dad and I had to switch places for me to be able to see the deer. By the time I had settled the doe was starting to get spooked. Just when I thought she was going to leave… her buck came out! I told my dad in a whisper only for him, “There’s a buck with her! I want him instead.” I was moving around so much getting myself into position that I thought they might leave but the buck just kept looking at me like he saw right through me! When that happened, only one thought came to my mind, “That is a stupid deer!” After about thirty seconds the doe ran off and I knew I had to take a quick shot or he would follow her.
So I did everything my dad had ever taught me about shooting, Put the dot right above the front leg, click the safety off and squeeze the trigger. And that’s exactly what I did. Right in the lungs I got my very first deer that was my trophy to go on the wall. The buck had been in front of a lot of brush so he ran through that and did a big U around us while I was screaming “He’s Mine!!!!!!!!!!!!” My dad was looking around for my little two-pointer when he looked off to the side and saw a little pencil buck. He turned to me and said “Ellie look another deer!” I looked over just in time to see it do its four-legged tip to the ground. “I guess that’s mine!” I said. We both ran over to see it, and when we got there we saw that it had two pints on one side and four two inch stubs on the other side! At first I was a little disappointed because I wanted the perfect symmetrical antlers. But after a while I began to see that my buck was the coolest I’d ever seen. I helped some with skinning it and getting the meat, but my dad let me turn around when it came to the internal organs.
On the boat ride home I fell asleep from overload. And on the drive home my mom called to say that they had a surprise for me and I spent the rest of the ride back trying to figure out what it could be. When I got home my little sister Emma gave me a hug but the first words out of her mouth were “Mom and I made cupcakes for you, you have to try them now!” So even though it was eight o’clock at night my mom let me have two cupcakes. They were really good if I do say so myself. And that is how I got my first ever deer. I really hope to go again another time.
